New Twitter Inc. owner Elon Musk emailed his workers for the first time late Wednesday to prepare them for “difficult times ahead” and ban remote work unless he personally approved it. Musk said there was “no way to sugarcoat the message” about the economic outlook and how it will affect an advertising-dependent company like Twitter, according to the email reviewed by Bloomberg News. The new rules, which kick in immediately, will expect employees to be in the office for at least 40 hours per week, he added. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-11-10/musk-s-first-email-to-twitter-staff-ends-remote-work #tech #rto #remote #wfh #tweeps
Not much remote workers can do. Companies aren’t hiring
This is just not accurate at all. I’m firmly remote and still beating recruiters off with a stick. In fairness, I’m pretty senior. It’s probably a different experience for jr engineers.
Yeah fully remote senior cowboy coders with no direct reports or impact on company roadmaps have always existed. You can continue to exist
Savage
What are people that worked remotely in states that don’t have a Twitter office supposed to do? You can’t fire them just because they live in whatever state, that’s just a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Pretty sure you can. There’s a change in policy and if you can’t come into alignment, then you have to go. Even Google has done this in good times.
Well, you can fire anyone anywhere, but it won't be for-cause. So they'll have to pay minimum 60d severance and unemployment.
Even in the craziness, im glad I went Meta instead of twitter as a full remote dev in a city without much tech
He has a point. FULL remote kills collaboration and productivity especially for new employees and employees who need more help and support from their peers.
A googler being against remote work? Shocker
Ok boomer.
Twitter was one of the few companies which went fully remote. So this email essentially means that another 50% of the current employees will voluntarily resign since they can't sell their remote home and move back to Bay area or NyC now. And who ever is left will be worked long hours in office changing features every week to the whims of their crazy CEO.
I think this is what he wants. Then he’ll shop for the cheapest IT in India.
@OP that is probably the intention… Remember the initial numbers were 75% to be laid off and he did 50% , this is the best way to get that extra 25%.. Talk about Twitter going from WFH forever to RTO asap
He let the entire advertising formats and experience dept go, so I really don’t see how he expects to support the advertisers that want to stay. There’s literally no employees to fix an ads related issue. They will fall severely behind competitors and lose so much revenue.
they’ve already lost revenue
Oh definitely. And they’ll continue to lose more. 80% of twitters revenue is from advertising. You can’t replace those number with an $8/m fee
He is speed running it to ground! Good job Elon , no govt subsidies are on the way just that you know Except maybe from Saudi
Elon don't you have a space or car company to run? Are they partying at those other companies while the boss is away distracted by other things?
