No one comes into the office. I am the only full time engineer in my office, everyone else is an intern. There's no way for me to connect to more senior engineers. I reach out to senior engineers a few times a week because otherwise I'm just working alone in the office. I get dismissive replies. If you're a senior, you should think about reaching out to new grads and juniors in your org/team. We have very little support. TC: 182k
The L3s with 15 YOE don’t go into the office to hangout with y’all? /s
brutal 😂
😂
Agree. Looking at in-person companies/startups for this reason And I have 3 YOE lol
We’re hiring in-person in SF and NYC at Merge (merge.dev)
What’s the interview process? Didn’t see anything on the site. Will apply soon
It’s not actually any better when you’re a senior TBH…
The same for a new manager. It is really tough to know you team members and learn the system.
Have you talked to your manager about your experience?
Please don't
Please do. If I were OP’s EM, I would definitely want to know about their experience and see how I can help. I would remind my seniors that overseeing junior and mid colleagues is part of their JD. I do include coaching and mentoring into performance objectives. If occasional ad hoc requests do not work for the team, I will set up formal lunch and learns and knowledge transfer sessions etc.
I hear you but is not rewarded at all by management. That's the real issue. If helping new grads helped 10% for a raise what doing a BS slide deck presentation helps, people would be fighting to guide you
This is tangential to OPs point though, even if it's not rewarded, people were helping new grads with questions they had as long as everyone was in the same office space. It takes more commitment now from new grads to reach out to people especially when they have no clue about their colleague's nature or work patterns.
Not sure what kinda org y'all are in - but ramping up and mentoring junior engineers is part of the job description of seniors in every company I've worked at.
Maybe there aren’t any incentives. If it’s not relevant to performance ratings, it defacto doesn’t matter
As an intern I would eat lunch with my team and I found that very useful. It was helpful to hear what they worked on and ask them questions about their work. I only know 4-5 people in my org and I have pretty much no idea what they do.
It’s much easier to communicate/learn from co-workers in-person.
Welcome to Google rofl
What support do you need
You need support??
