Hello friends, so now that the job market is opening up there's been more interviews and Zillow is one of them. I was hoping anyone who's worked there or knows info can tell me more about the WLB at Zillow? From what i can tell people say its "good" or "team-based" but coming from Square i've learned that's really not the full truth most of the time. In a 40 hour workday, How much would you say you spend working? Or in simpler terms. Do you ever feel comfortable leaving work at 3 PM? I also saw Zillow seems to have a doc culture? Square is obsessed with docs and from what I've seen it makes things very political, wondering if its the same issue at Zillow. I appreciate any info. (And if you feel it's team-based. please talk about your team instead, it helps a lot) TC: 360K --> 150K (135K Base. Not including sign on here) (Our stock is complete and total shit and our bonus/refreshers are too) #tech #zillow #wlb #culture
What’s your base at Square?
135K
Wait why did you tc drop?
The stock has free-fell. We're talking almost -200$ down. Anyone last year is at least $50 down. They minimized our refreshers too and gave none to at least 10% of the company as well. Basically my stock doesn't exist at this point. not even worth selling Personally i'm not a fan of including stock in TC but that's how people calculate it.
Zillow has been fantastic for me. Great work life balance, and always been able to take care of myself if I ever need to head out for a doctor's appointment or anything of the sort. Ever since I I joined it always felt like the type of place I could work and successfully raise a family too with their great work life balance. I think it can vary by team, but by and large most of the teams are excellent, and I've had great interactions with others I've worked with. Don't work more than 40 hours a week and I personally hard stop around 3:30 most days cause I start around 7, but never felt guilty leaving earlier if all my work is in a good place.
Thank you! i'm glad to hear this. By the way is it true that Zillow is a heavy doc culture? Like writing and reviewing docs regularly as a dev process?
I'm unfamiliar with the dev process so can't offer much help there unfortunately. But in any meeting I've been a part of or project there hasn't been a heavy doc focus if that helps
Hi op what’s your YOE? I’m 4 yoe and target SDE2 (not Senior) and I can confirm now more interviews. However reminder that it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easier to get offer. The offer conversion rate is still low.
I have truly, really enjoyed my time at Zillow so far. Feel incredibly lucky to have landed here, honestly. That’s how much I like it. Of course, YMMV, but that’s the anecdata I have to offer. The WLB has been a godsend for my fam (I’m VERY hands-on with my littles, and just get my work done, with plenty of flexibility to arrange the day to make my work and home life intersect in a way that benefits both). Also, I’m an engineer here, and I would say that we are not doc-heavy at all. I almost wish we were a little more! And engineers are really cooperative, too. I’d also say that our above-senior engineers are truly phenomenal (talented and kind). I have yet to meet a bad one, or even a decent one. They’re great (IMHO, and YMMV, again).
Love the WLB, and management that never gives you any grief for using it. Our core hours are 10-2pm PST, and then you can flex to either side of that in most roles. I think the doc culture is just about right. Docs and update presentations are required for any major company initiatives, and that’s how I know what most of the business is working on and keep up to date. Outside of that I see much fewer docs and actually wish there were more, or easier to find.
Curious is Zillow hiring SWE now?
Would agree with what others have to say. Great WLB. My team is one of the more heavy work teams than my friends who work at Zillow but even my team we dont work more than 40 hours. Doc culture is not as much as it should be tbh. Would like it if it’s more than what it is
Wow I’d like to join Zillow …
Absolutely love it here

Ouch that TC hit hurts. Good luck my friend.
