Unpopular opinion: I couldn’t care less about Trump’s convictions
Currently have offers from both these companies. I have other scheduled phone screens and onsites but want to focus my discussion on these for the time being. If you had to pick one, which one would you choose and why? Would you keep interviewing? Other Onsites: Google, LinkedIn, Brex, Affirm Other phone screens: Stripe, Airbnb (2nd phone screen), Twitter Facebook Offer: Background: Was told SWE E4 headcount is low and was turned to Solutions Engineering. PRO: Interesting mix of business and programming - may help me pivot to product/management roles in the future Facebook brand Competitive Pay Con: Less equity compared to SWE Moving away from traditional software track that may impact my leveling in the future if I choose to go back to SWE Though not the ultimate goal: if I were to transition to SWE within Facebook (I know it’s not easier), my equity remains the same (????) Rivian Offer: PRO: - Exciting work in an exciting space (seems like EV is everywhere) - Keeps me on the traditional software eng track - Pre-IPO (equity could 3x+) CON: - Low ball initial offer - WLB is not great at the moment - Suboptimal vesting scheme - Stories about rescinded offers Overall thoughts: I get a sense that you still code a lot as a solutions engineer at Facebook and should I choose to ultimately pivot back to SWE in the future, I’d have gained valuable knowledge here as well (maybe not as much depth but valuable knowledge regardless). Seems like really exciting times at Rivian, just wish the compensation was on par. I have no hard numbers yet. YOE: 4.5#
Rivian
Make it a poll
Offer details?
I think equity actually would go up ~50% if you transitioned to SWE, but the offer is take-it-or-leave-it. And you’d have to go through the full set of interviews.
is Rivian paper money? if so, then not them
Continue interviewing
I have exactly same situation and decision to make right now. 5 YOE. I am inclined more towards Rivian because of exciting domain. But taking input from as many people I can before final decision. Did you decide yet?
NEVER believe anything about your future from recruiters (become manager, change things, etc). Their job is to close the position. Think about long term: will you be happy if you stay solution eng in fb in3 years? Will you be happy if you join to Rivian as swe, but they don’t go ipo? What’s your long term career plans after these companies? Also TC in rivian?
