Hi Folks, my friend is currently working as Principal Engineer at Walmart, and recently he received an offer from Meta/FB as Staff Engineer(e6). But staff is a lower level at Walmart, so does he get downleveled? Which level is higher between Walmart principal engineer and Meta/FB staff engineer? #tech #Walmart #Meta #fb Hes yoe 8 with master degree
Isn’t staff the same as principal?
At Walmart staff is 5 and principal is 6
Who cares. Look at compensation
Levels doesn't have this info? I'd rely on that
Lol who cares really ! If he does don’t take the job yes it’s just embarrassing. Ask him to request for e7
He did ask for E7, but it’s absolutely impossible
Between Principal and Staff the seniority can be arbitrary. There are no hard rules and your claim in the OP is only 1 instance. If he likes the money and role, tell him to take it. You are asking for a friend, aren't you? ;)
Yes, I don’t want to mislead him, so trying to hear some voice in the community
frankly if you aren’t at FAANG expect a downlevel since levels most likely do not map cleanly. It’s also best not to compare levels at non FAANG since you may have larger scope and tc at fb despite downlevel. Also remember externally once your friend is looking for work outside of meta, is not obligated to share his level. So companies will assume his level based on past experience and yoe. Because it’s meta, companies will naturally uplevel their roles in an attempt to try and get them + compete with current tc. Also you won’t get downleveled at other FAANG. Tl;dr if the tc is higher ur friend shouldn’t feel embarrassed. And he should stop sharing his level around publicly, it can actually hurt him in negotiations in the future
Thanks! This is helpful. At Walmart everyone has a title and that title matters, so I guess he just felt a bit strange for not sharing his level
Lol its an opportunity to take a lower role if the compensation is higher and go back to Meta after sometime asking for more as a Principal engineer, guess as Boomerang he will have more chances to qualify.
I know a colleague who went from Sr Principal Engineer, to a Sr Software Engineer position at Apple. The designation/grade varies widely between companies (and industries)

It feels like it might be arbitrary, as long as the compensation is higher and the responsibilities are similar or more interesting or better, does it matter?
Yes, his colleagues may ask him what you’re going next. Then he may feel a bit embarrassed to say I’m joining as staff engineer, which is a lower level at Walmart.
So it sounds like this is more of an ego thing, my opinion is that it doesn't really matter. But your friend can just lie and say it's the same, if that's all they want.
