Current: SDE L5 - TC: 250k - 170k Base & 80k(stock) - location issue, team in a different location and was asked to move by May 2024. High performer on this team. Promo path not clear. Manager changed multiple times in one last year due to reOrg. Promo carrot only verbal no documentation started by any manager. Offer: Senior SDE - Walmart - 165k + 50k(stock) + 25k yearly bonus = TC: 240k- offer is in same location. Same domain. But this is a newly formed team (few months old). yoe-14 - Is it worth switching now? - Does title switch matter? - How is work life balance in Walmart Labs? - Is this stepping down or up the ladder? - Should I stay and push for promo? 5 years in Amazon.
Seems like a low ball , you should at least get a staff a Walmart.
With 14 years of experience, you can aim for the staff engineer role. Are you good at system design ? Able to carry out conversations across teams in designing and unblocking any requirements for the development team. Aim for staff role. On the other hand, your pay can change for this role as there will be 100k yearly RSU for this role + bump in base pay. I think the bonus stays the same
Bonus is 20% for staff vs 15% for Sr SWE
The offer is too low, and having Walmart on a resume is not favored. The bonus is not actually $25k; it's 20% of the base salary, and depends on company metrics. A fair base salary for Senior SDE would be in the range of $180k to $190k. It would be reasonable to negotiate for a sign-on bonus, perhaps around $20k. So even if you negotiate it, it doesn't make sense for you. Also be prepared for the challenge of dealing with bunch of unreliable internal services, which can be quite annoying.
It’s not 20% of base anymore, it’s 15% now after the pay restructuring
Why is it not favored ?? I mean they are a big corporation. Better than working in a small company that no one has heard no ? Their tech stack is actually not bad at all.
Walmart. Curious if you've any pros staying in amazon?
L5 Amazon to X4 Walmart is a downgrade. Your Walmart offer itself is a lowball because the base is low and you mentioned no sign-on cash/equity. You should be X5 or X6 Walmart (IC) or an SDM. I really don’t think you should take the X4 offer that you currently have
WLB is dumb. Mentioning it makes you seem childish. You should be thinking about which is the better platform on which to build your business. Thinking like an employee will never bring you success or happiness in tech.
Just write your own promo doc. It's easy. I can show you how. We should have a separate thread on getting promoted at Amazon. But that assumes you have done the things that make you promotable. TC would indicate that you have not, as would the mention of WLB. Sounds like L5 is maybe the right level for you.
Sr. SDE with 14 YOE seems to be a low ball. May be you should try EM roles here
Sr sde is a terminal role throughout the industry, and in most cases offers the best balance between pay/responsibility and WLB. EM is an entirely different skill set and not everyone's fit for it/going to like it OP will just end up miserable if they go into EM role without actually enjoying it Nothing wrong with accepting a senior offer
