I'll get straight to the point! Walmart - Technical Project Manager Intern pros: - higher intern pay - higher starting salary - imagine telling people you work for Walmart and having them think so low about you only to later realize you're not a sales associate cons: - no job security (assuming I get a return offer, I'd have to job hop here and there and grind) - not too sure what the exact pay is coming out of an internship at Walmart (TPM intern specifically)... if someone could clarify a ballpark, that'd be fantastic Department of Defense - Software Engineering Intern pros: - highest obtainable security clearance (without being some form of cabinet+) - cool work (obviously I can't expand on the type of work) - job security (assuming I get a return offer, it's the government-- let's be real...) - can move around to other *entities* (😉) and rack up more experience which would make me a prime candidate at Microsoft or Amazon if I grind Leetcode (dreading this :/) cons: - lower intern pay - lower starting salary About me: - Previous intern at GE (apparently I was the only intern that made something production-ready during my summer there-- let me tell you, it was a massive project too) - Currently a junior, but senior by credits at a top computer science university What am I looking for?: - Some interesting work and pay to be good coming out of college. Part of my family says to take DoD, the other says Walmart. What are your thoughts on this? also, how does one remove GE from my username when I go elsewhere :) #walmart #dod #security #software #tpm #pm #swe #se #money #intern #internship #happiness #help #please #plz #tech
Why walmart has 0 security?
Compared to working for the government, you never know if your next day is your last day. If I worked for the DoD, I know I'd always have a job tomorrow and there'd always be some form of stability. Additionally, there's a guaranteed pay raise annually with the DoD. Now Walmart, I see it being performance-based strictly and I can always be replaced by another individual at a cheaper price. but then again, Walmart is a good starting place then I can just grind hard and work at FB, Microsoft, Google, or wherever... climb the ladder basically :]
OP, with your logic no private sector job is secure...
Dod looks cool on resume but Walmart is probably better
Dod
DoD for the security clearance.
TS/SCI + Poly makes you prime material for Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, Palantir, Anduril, etc. Just be prepared for the type of work not being as exciting as you might think.
Don’t do DOD. DM me. Also I have a clearance
