Walmart vs IBM for Product Management career

Have an offer to join Walmart, currently work in IBM’s Cloud division. Want to know if it’s a downgrade to move from IBM to Walmart. I’d be moving from a more platform oriented PM role (don’t want to do this anymore anyway) to a B2B2C role in Walmart’s Tech division. Also currently interviewing at some Series E and recently IPO’d B2B “startups,” but I’m not that passionate about most of them and am a bit tired of interviewing Location Bay Area YOE 4.5 TC @ IBM 🥜 #productmanager #product #pm #walmart #ibm

What’s the Walmart TC?

Not sure, got a verbal offer, written is processing. How much should I expect for Bay Area 4.5 YOE all in product?

With your YoE at least 165 base. Walmart Tech pays low compared to others but that’s because of retail + frugal Sam Walton culture. I would recommend pushing through the other interviews if TC is a high priority because the startups might beat Ws offer.

Killing it!! PM with just few Yoe!!?? TC??

I was accepted right out of undergrad to their APM program. TC is 🥜 at IBM. No scheduled bonuses, no stocks (unless ad hoc… I have about $20k vesting in 3 years lmao)

You can travel a lot as a PM at IBM though in non pandemic settings

I read in blind, Walmart PM in their tech team is just program management. Nothing close to traditional product management. You might wanna research more on the Walmart role

Thanks for the pointers here @622881. Within the context of Walmart, are there any specific questions I should ask to confirm this? I know the product role varies from team to team. I know that they have the three pronged design-pm-eng. I already spoke with a good amount of the team.

I wish I could recall which post it was on blind, but it was someone checking Tc for a new Pm role he cleared, and a former Walmart Pm with the tech team cautioned, how this is sorta like a dead end in terms of learning curve cause you’re basically a program manager just managing roadmaps, and manage data reporting, while upper management/exec hand out features you need to implement. The commentator said he left as soon as he finished a year with that team. I remember this cause I had a chat with him (my current role is similar to what he’d described, not Walmart). Unfortunately I don’t can’t answer your question specifically. But if you’re satisfied, and dug deep enough, then I guess you should take it up. Good chance this isn’t every team in Walmart, but i remember he specifically said with tech team there.

Silly to even compare. Walmart is a fortune 1 company.
