Hello everyone, I am in a bit of a bind and could really use some help making a decision. I have recently received an offer from Walmart for an SDE position that would pay me around 250k to 260k TC. However, I heard the WLB is bad at Walmart and there could be a lot of early morning or late tonight meetings. I’m currently in a mid size company with around 200k TC and has always been very accommodating when it comes to work-life balance, the work is interesting tho the oncall is once in every 5 weeks. I am torn between these two options and could use some guidance on how to make the best decision. Walmart: Pros: - Oncall once in 10 weeks. - TC is better - In a core team Cons: - Bad WLB - Could be very political - Lack of diversity - Not sure about the job security Current Job: Pros: - WLB is great - Stable - Diversity is good Cons: - TC is less than Walmart - Oncall once in 5 weeks (daytime only) Has anyone been in a similar situation before? How did you weigh the pros and cons of each? What factors should I consider when making this decision? I would really appreciate any insights or advice you could offer. Thank you in advance for your help! TC: 200k YOE: 5 #walmart
Going from $200k TC to $250k TC is a pretty healthy 25% increase in TC (exceeds my personal minimum threshold of 20%). Something to be aware of, Walmart has pulled out of several key metros such as Austin TX (source - https://www.statesman.com/story/business/technology/2023/02/14/walmart-austin-tx-tech-office-closure-what-to-know/69902899007/). Are you open to living in Arkansas? I would only accept the job if you understand that risk. From a comp perspective this looks like a good move.
Ya I’m aware of this. Definitely not looking for relocating to Arkansas. I was offered to work from Seattle hub.
If the work is interesting then take the offer else it’s not worth for jeopardizing your wlb
What are the locations?
Both in Seattle area requires 2-3 days a week in office
Which org in Walmart and what level?
Senior SDE, Walmart global tech, not sure about the exact team tho
Few teams in Walmart has good wlb but most of other teams suffer with no recognition or wlb...
That’s what I’ve heard after talking to their team members through LinkedIn. WLB seems to be pretty bad.
Do not. It’s not worth it. They make you work like dog. I was making the same decision 5 months ago and now I can’t find a job elsewhere to leave Walmart.
Op, when did you apply at Walmart?
