How do I go about becoming a product manager in a FAANG company? I dont understand how product manager differs from project management and more importantly what soft and hard skillsets are needed? I cant do much about practical experience but can ramp on tools/software/other skillset. I have been a programmer (in first 15 years of my work life) and now a project manager (last 7-8 years) in my 20 years of experience in non-profit national research laboratories and supercomputing centers. Most of my Project Management work is based on jira/confluence/microsoft-project and not many skills are really needed to do PM work in my kind of workplace. In my research programing life, I worked and had a good understanding of topics related to programming model libraries/operating systems/supercomputing applications.... I have taken courses such as PMP etc, but I found them to be an overkill and un-necessary in my current organization. I am not interested in the programming/coding part anymore but want to focus my career towards product management. TC: $175K (plus nothing else in terms of RSU/bonus) Location: Bay area

Product management comes up with ideas and strategy on what to do. Project management makes sure things get completed on time.
That much I know :)
