Recently started working on a new project ... spent almost 10 days and still couldnt figure why the api wonât process my data as expected ... feel like a total idiot ... and doesnât help every day looking like moron in front of the entire team during the daily stand ups saying iâm still trying ... not sure what else to do ... im scared they may fire me if i keep going like this. đ
Debugging is an art. It needs time, practice, and experience.
Ask for help . Maybe ask in stand ups if any one has faced this kind of issue
I have multiple times ... people give me paths to follow ( most of which I may ave already tried ) and it ends up not works ... no one has the time for a screen share or if they do they end up giving abstract suggestions
Thatâs the whole point of daily standup call . No one expect you to finish it . You can just say am stuck here and need help to debug further . You have to raise this impediment . Thatâs how you have to work in a team . Dont go there till end of the sprint and say I couldnât finish it . You should have raised this after spending 2 days
I have raised it everyday ... I mention what I tried ( specially if it was suggested by a teammate) and the outcomes ...
How do you go 10 days without either asking for help from someone who has done it before or your boss stepping in and asking someone to work with you? Also, is the documentation so bad that you cannot figure it out on your own? If yes, once you figure it out offer to write up a doc that helps new people - this will earn you some brownie points
I have asked for help a bunch of times ... they give me paths to follow ( most of which I may ave already tried ) and it ends up not working ... no one has the time for a screen share or if they do they end up giving abstract suggestions
When this happens, write a plan and keep notes of what youâve done. Stay rational and be systematic. Here youâre encountering a situation that goes beyond what you can do single handedly, so help yourself to be successful. And when feeling overwhelmed, read your notes and/or ask yourself recursively why is that you feel that way.
great advice!
You have to ask for help if stuck for 2 days on the same task. You are not just wasting your time but also putting teamâs deliverables at risk.
No one offered to help you? I feel it's also the team's responsibility to help you out. And yeah you can ask for help too, it's totally okay. Don't feel too bad, everyone learns eventually.
