Water softener and RO system

Just got an estimate for a home in Dublin ca: - pro 48 performance water softener with clack valve: $1695 - vertex 4 stage RO: $495 - plumbing labor: $400-495 Is this reasonable? Should I go with something from Amazon instead? Any recommendations?

Why do you need that softener?

I don’t know about THAT particular softener, that’s what I was quoted. I’m new to all of this. I just know that the water in Dublin is very hard and I don’t want my appliances, counter tops, etc; to be damaged. That has been happening at my rental in South Bay, we have to replace all the shower head and faucets every 7-8 months

Are you sure that the water in Dublin is very hard?

The RO unit sounds high, cheaper units are available on Amazon. Unless you have a bunch of fish tanks or something and need lots of volume, but in that case, you’d probably already know what you are looking for and wouldn’t be asking here. We got ours on Amazon and use it for sensitive fish and plants.

RO is about what I paid for mine. You probably could find cheaper ones but you usually get what you pay for. So if good clean water is important then don't get the cheapest one you can find.

Costco has RO system for $169. Also go for saltless water softener or descaler, it is much cheaper. it has lot of benefits compared to salt based water softeners. Most notable ones are: salt based ones waste a lot of water but there is no water wastage in saltless ones. Moreover saltless ones are easy to install and don’t require a plumber.

Interesting, are there any disadvantages with the salt less one? Most places seems to offer the salt based one. Thanks for the comment!

I’m still researching. Haven’t found any major disadvantages. Actually the saltless ones retain the minerals in the water as opposed to salt based ones which remove the minerals. So looks like saltless ones have more advantage.

Saw some videos where they say that saltless doesn’t work as good. So much conflicting information though.

There’s got to be trade-offs.
