I'm seeing that both Amazon an Wayfair are lower rated companies on Blind. I have completing offers with Wayfair's total comp being approx $15k higher, but also heavier on RSUs. Wayfair would require relocation to Boston rather than staying in NYC. Anyone worked at both companies to compare work culture and pros/cons? Thoughts on life in Boston for Wayfair? TC: 170-185k (This is for a non-tech role.) YoE: 8 years
Which position at Amazon and whats your Amazon offer?
It's a Construction Manager L6 position at $170k.
I am surprised Amazon is still hiring construction managers with all of the projects they just cut. Is it in the AMZL business line?
I have done both, Wayfair is confusing and frustrating.
That's "Naked and Confused"
Yikes. Is this due to growing pains? Sounds like leadership maybe inexperienced?
Boston is good...not as good as NYC but cheaper
Yeah, it's hard to compare to NYC, but we took a hit after the pandemic and there is uncertainty with the new mayoral administration.
what kind of uncertainty? boston has a new mayor too
Both are shitty
I have been at both and have now left both, Amazon was the highest stress level was there 3.5 years L7, cool projects, generously expense policy, but relentless focus on mechanisms and delivery KPIs aged me. Wayfair, way less stress but so political and full of leaders that can't lead that it's hard to get anything done. Also Wayfair is CHEAP, I done mean frugal, I mean CHEAP, you get $20 per employee to do team events and travel per diem is $25 how do you eat on $25 a day? Was also told that they would pay for conferences but won't pay for travel to them.
Yikes, my position would include travel, and those stipends are nearly impossible to work within if you buy something at the airport.
There haven’t been cups on my side of the office floor for weeks. Company cheap af and 🗑
Neither
Left testicle or right testicle sir?
Aye close your balls together
I’ve been in Boston tech for quite some time and I really never heard a positive thing about wayfair. With Amazon, I’ve heard there are departments where you can just kinda do your work and keep a low profile and make out with lots of money
Wayfair was my last company till mid 2021. Haven't worked at Amazon. About WF: 1. Depends on the team and manager for the work to be interesting. Jd can change very quickly upon joining. Some teams are really fast growth and some seriously sad, frustrating and confusion. 2. Company is very manager heavy when it comes to reviews, promotion and raises. As long as the manager is happy then you do well. 3. Internal mobility is possible but only after 1 yr. 4. You have to play politics irrespective of the team. 5. One of the amazing benefits they provide is Progyny Fertility services. Can be easily worth 100k of benefit if used (had teammates who used them). Personally din need to. 6. Employee discounts on Wayfair and its brands is really good. 20-40% depending on the item. About life in Boston: 1. Slow pace of life compared to NYC (if you have had late nights in NYC then dont expect that in Boston). 2. Colder than NYC (usually starting September until may end) 3. Rent/buying is on par with nyc if you stay in downtown, Copley or Brookline. 4. In home laundry is luxury in Boston. Only the new buildings in the last 3 years have them. 5. Will recommend living close to the green subway line
I appreciate your through breakdown. Thank you for addressing both questions. Regarding internal mobility, was this common? I hear that it is common at Amazon if you at in good standing, but sometimes your manager may block you. Not sure if this is frowned upon or encouraged at Wayfair.
WF ratings are between 1-5. As long as your are rating 1, 2 or 3; you can apply for internal transfer and current manager doesn't know until you have accepted the offer from the new team. Mobility had become easier in 2021.
