Hi, EMs from C1, need your views on market worth of EM role in Capital One. I have following things in my mind: 1. Is Manager role a Lead role. I mean do you guys actually do people management or are just hands on tech lead? Can EMs in C1 get EM role in FAANG? 2. What is the scope of role and responsibilities? How many people you manage? Are they college kids or you actually manage experienced talented lead engineers? e.g. managing 2-3 college kids or tier 4 SWE does not count as management :( 3. Are the projects given have big impact or are they some small projects? 4. What perks do EM have over tech leads else where? do you guys get work that you can showcase elsewhere? 5. Do you guys do coding? I might get an offer for Sr. Software Engineering Manager. Is Sr. Software Engineering Manager == M2 i.e. manager of managers or is he more like M1 with just a title difference? Is role of Senior Manager anything higher/better than a lowest level Manager? #capitalone #c1
Senior Managers usually have at least 1 Manager reporting to them in addition to at least 1 tech lead. Also may have a bunch of contractors reporting to them depending on the team. From what I’ve seen, most EMs don’t code, but they can depending on how deeply they lean into the tech side of things. I’ve also seen EMs flip flop between IC and management based on the needs of the org Senior Manager is the people leader equivalent to Sr. Lead Software Engineer (i’m not a manger, these are just my observations)
A senior manager doesn’t code here, doesn’t function as a tech lead. Senior managers usually have at least 7 people rolling up to them. A regular manager can often be a tech lead with no direct reports or just a few recent college grads (TDPs)
Many SMs are glorified project managers and coordinators. They facilitate making things happen by setting up meetings between teams and sometimes helping with roadmaps but don't contribute code. If they're new to the company they simply don't know how all the internal platforms work in depth to be effective
Also, be prepared for twice a year stack ranking, covert layoffs under the guise of performance management, and constant re-orgs
YOE? TC? SM is mapped to L5/L6 in FAANG i think. Which department is it?
don't know
When was your power day? How long did they take to respond? Email reject or call?
