Background: I was pipped at amazon and pip task was insane, and there was no guidance and help from my manger. Now after 6 years me being a TL here we ran into a situation were a team member wasn’t able to meet the expectations during review although we( me and my manger) tried to support(cuz the work given was hard and was compared with senior guy) but we failed to save the member in review meeting. My task was to give a project to that guy for re-evaluation. 1st I asked my manger to give him one week off to start with fresh mind. And we gave him easy project asked for his Estimate. Almost gave him time Double his estimate, gave him a mentor who did similar kind of project. I am glad he did his Tasks ahead of time and I am sure he will be safe now. I still kinda feel bad for what happened to me at amazon 6 years ago. And still seeing post on blind about pip and not supportive managers and the amazon culture. But I think the people at amazon can change the culture because people are the culture. When get promotion or become manger show the right path. PS: there might be some unknown parameters at amazon which I am not aware of but I still feel you guys can change it. Pressure and toxicity changes everything. You only need a few bad actors and majority will tilt. At Amazon, there's multiple things against you. Even if the manager wants to help, maybe the Team lead won't it maybe the mentor is too busy and all of them are to pressured already to save their own ass. What you did is great though and I wish everyone did the same
The core issue at Amazon is that there’s no consistent bar for managerial support and team health. You can move teams and the bottom totally falls out of your experience or vastly improves. That’s terrible culture.
