Modi is a legend, will be remembered for centuries to come
I know some people are against assessments but I will do them as long as there is no benefit to the company. Every single exercise assessment that I have done so far fits this criteria: it is either a timed Excel brain teaser, I analyze dummy data or data of a random company, or if I am using the hiring company's data, the data is ancient and I'm not projecting or analyzing anything that they don't already know. A startup reached out to me for an interview a while ago. I did the first round but didn't hear from them for a month or two and figured they ghosted me. Recently I was contacted for round two. I passed and today they gave me an Excel exercise to do. When they told me they were giving me 5 business days to do it, I was shocked at how long they were giving me: the longest I ever had to do an assessment was 3 days. I opened the file and saw that they wanted me to build a financial model that forecasted revenue and expenses. The instructions had assumptions about how the company operates. Cool. Then I looked at it and they literally have actuals from January 2022 to May 2022 and they want me to forecast THIS MONTH (yes, June 2022) all the way through the year 2024. Wtf?! This will definitely be used to benefit the company! *Can they be any more obvious?* They didn't even try to hide it. I get paid to do this stuff at work, why would I do it for free? I'm definitely not doing this shit. Even if I didn't have a job, I still wouldn't do it because it's exploitation. I emailed the Director, recruiter, and the other analyst I was interviewing with and told them that I'm withdrawing my application and stop asking people for free work. What was their response? I can’t believe they did this.
No response
I got one from a fairly major firm not a startup that looks like it could be used for their benefit as well. Dunno what to think.
Hmm what did they want you to do? If you're feeling uneasy, don't do it.
It was to create a campaign for an existing product. That's definitely something that could be used. Nothing was changed about it. But I knew the head of the team from past work so don't think they would be shady. Declined though as it made me realise the work would bore me
You should have given them completely bogus data, but realistic enough to believe. Or something very confusing anyway
If it's believable then that's me doing the work lol Not worth my time. Plus don't want them to have the satisfaction of thinking that I fell for the scam.
I would have asked questions to understand if that was the case or not. You made a strong assumption, that can be wrong, even by a small chance. And it is ok to withdraw, but I probably would have done it in a different and inquisitive way.
Under what circumstance would it have not been the case though? I build financial models and forecasts at work all the time. I recognize what it is. Plus I have been interviewing for a while now and have taken dozens of these assessments: this is NOT the norm.
I agree with you that it is bad if they were asking you to do their job for free. I'm not trying to say you were wrong. Just saying I probably would have tried to confirm my suspicions before making any accusations.
Ah, missed an opportunity to send it back telling them they will be billionaires by fall
😆 that would have been funny
🤣
