We were notified individually; it's not all it's cracked up to be

When Nordstrom did layoffs in September, we were told individually via teams meetings. We maintained access to systems for a few hours. On the flip side, we got 30 days on payroll and 1 week severance per yos. Benefits only went through the 30-day notice period. I'll trade my in-person notification for your severance package.

It’s hard to pay your mortgage with a personalized layoff notice. I’d prefer take the severance. There is no loyalty towards any of us.

I also don’t understand the clamoring for in-person delivery of bad news. The outcome doesn’t change. Certainly a generous severance is better than however the news is delivered.

Ya it's odd to see people complain out no personal feeling in a layoff, when companies are paying for months of salary post-firing Most of the nation lose their pay the NEXT DAY

Completely agree. I don't understand the fuss behind in person notifications. First of all its a logistical nightmare to inform thousands across different geographies, and more when frontline and even skip managers are not part of the decision making. Second, there is a no good or bad way to deliver the message, and the in-person notification saves both party from the awkwardness. Third, its the package that ultimately matters when you loose the job. If we have a great relationship with manager and team, most of them are anyways going to be in touch. It is always about the people we get to work with, and not the company that matters.

To be honest, I've been laid off twice in my career. Once in-person and once via email. I can confirm: Both experiences were 🗑️ .. 🤣

What do you expect for a severance package… it’s Nordstrom

I asked my spouse, who was laid off in 2020, about this. He said he would have preferred an email as the outcome was the same. The layoff was a shock so he really did not know how to respond except asking when he would receive his termination agreement. His severance package was similar to Nordstrom's - 30 days severance, but the company was willing to reimburse for COBRA for 8 months.

Yeah i don’t want to deal with meeting people just to get shitty news. Can handle that later
