I like my career as a web developer, but I've been losing interest in working at a typical e-commerce company, making websites that I don't have an interest in/passion for. I want to try to break into the game industry but still make use of my skills as a web dev. I'm open to making customer-facing websites, but what I'm more interested in are roles where I can build web applications that facilitate game development. Been looking around and here are some job postings that's caught my eyes: https://careers.blizzard.com/global/en/job/R006222/Senior-Front-End-Software-Engineer https://www.riotgames.com/en/work-with-us/job/2307123/senior-software-engineer-riot-developer-experience-operability-los-angeles-usa Here are some questions... I would really appreciate answers from folks that are web developers at AAA game companies. Thank you in advance. - My current TC is ~270. I don't expect to make that much, but curious to know how steep of a pay cut I should expect in roles like this? - How much do you get to interact/network with people that actually make the games (game devs, game designers, visual designers, etc.) as a web developer at a AAA game company? - I am really hoping to be able to work with people that have passion for their craft, rather than those that are simply looking for a "9-5 Job"... is it naive for me to think that the game industry will attract more passion-driven people than average? - What is it like to be a web dev at a game company? I guess my primary concern is if I would be treated as 2nd class citizen? - (For Blizzard Employees) I grew up playing Blizzard games, and I would love to work for Blizzard, but I've been reading so many sad stories about the company that I admired growing up... If you are a web developer at Blizzard, can you share what your experience has been?
9-5 job … in the gaming industry?!?! Even if that’s what they want, there’re working WAY more than that!
It’s really not that bad anymore. At least, not at EA.
+1 to EA…I’ve never worked a weekend and only had a handful of latish nights
A PC game company is not a bad place to try to make your web dev skills pay off until the bitter end. Curious how much longer will you give yourself as a web developer. Do you plan to learn to develop for consumer hardware?
From what I saw at levels.fyi it seems like riot pays better than blizzard and won’t be as much as a cut. But can’t give much insight definitely curious as I am also interested in going into gaming. My first dev job was as a Flash action script 3 dev. Lol. Miss playing what I build.
You’ll make less than half of that easy and you’ll work more hours
Likewise would like to hear more experience from others moreso from a traditional software development transition. I'm looking to make the transition to become one of those passionate coworkers.
Heard good things about Epic
Hey bb, I am dev with similar situation and my TC isnt that different from yours currently with 3 YOE. You can decide if EA falls into the AAA category but ymmv. I work with game client engineers almost every day, but I'm able to keep my 9-5 (but sometimes I actually just lose track of time because we're all just having a good time). They are very passionate folk and care a lot (a lot) about the game and the players. We're also first class citizens but that's because we're also in tools development. You can DM me for more deets, but good luck with your journey!
Can I dm you for info about life at EA as an engineer?
Yes!
You may want to try Epic Games to join Store web team. Great people, super knowledgeable and very high-skill, nice company culture. Regarding TC. Don’t know details, but it’s very nice for Raleigh-Cary area. Superb medical insurance.
Encourage you to look at Roblox too! We're a gaming platform rather than a company that makes games so I would expect a pay bump, reasonable working hours and still working with people who are actually passionate about what they do!

If you think Blizzard has passion anymore....you're very wrong. Sorry but they used to. That's why lots of WoW players are heading to FFXIV
Yeah, I understand that the culture at Blizzard has been shifting for the worse and the game quality has been declining. That's not exactly a secret. But I don't think that implies that the creators working there are not passionate/talented people...
The company is undergoing massive attrition, just search blizzard on blind
