The short of it is I'm a healthcare provider, medical reason forced me to sell my practice and be our for 4-12 months . Unsure if I'll be able to get back to practice (likely will) but even if I could working in the cog is pointless, 200-250 ceiling for my field as an IC usually w out much in the way of benefits (but work 4 days a week).. I always had an interest in CS/Swe, took some courses many years ago . Anyway I quickly went through codesmith csx and took their entrance exam and got admitted.. did the Harvard cs50 course. I know most of y'all don't like Bootcampers, but I'm thinking of codesmith as an intro / make sure I like it as much as I think , maybe I get my foot in the door or just have to keep working and learning from there to break in. Certainly open to doing a bscs/mscs to. Continue a career path. (Don't forget I have a doctorate in an unrelated field ) Markets changed ,excess junior developers , offshoring, x/y/z reasons not to But would it be a crazy path to take ? #engineering #software #swe Tc 500k-> 0. Though now have about 100k in passive income.
Coming from zero tech/engineer experience to finishing said boot camp. TC 40-50k (Prior career switch, pre-2020) TC 120k (2 months+ after boot camp @ startup, late 2020, 0 YOE) TC 130k (after series A, 2021) TC 150k (raise and adjustment for inflation, 2022) TC 250k+ (beginning soon with big tech, with now ~2 YOE) Good luck OP
Thank you, and congratulation! Though a bit worrying since the job market is certainly much different than it was in 2020 - what are you seeing out there now? What's your wlb like,?
The market has definitely been tougher, but I had 3 offers to choose from. Not sure if you've started yet but by the time you're done, the market may be in a much better place again.
How’s the switch going, OP?
It hasn't as of yet. An opportunity came my way that made sense

That makes sense, you were making 500k TC before. I don’t think it would be worth going back to an entry level SWE
That's what everyone was saying. But the issue is I have to physically bg there's can't work from somewhere , wfh etc ever. If my hands aren't working I'm not making money. Granted I worked 4 days a week. Minimal paid vaca , no other benefits. I'd take a comp hit for that stuff at this point
Starting over may be quite a grind since you will sort of no longer have your vast experience to fall back on. The crazy TC you see on here are usually backed by experience and a lot of knowledge. SDE can also be kind of socially isolating depending on what you’re used to, the people your working with will be different and the job requires you to be staring at a screen most of the day. In the end it comes down to what you’re trying to get out of it and what you want in life.
Can't tbag experience be gained over a couple years ? Yes it'll be tough to go back to low 6 figures but if I can keep progressing I'm fine w it. Im faurly set for retirement just need to have spending money and not hate what I do. .
