What CC to get?

I’m about to buy a new laptop and thought this would be a good time to get a new CC to fill out any intro bonus reqs. Most spend will be in the following: 1. International travel (2 or 3 times in the next year) 2. Groceries 3. Car payment (if possible) 4. Eating out 5. Rent (If possible) Cards I’m considering: 1. Chase Sapphire Reserve 2. Venture X 3. Chase Sapphire Preferred 4. Some Amex card (apparently MSFT employees get discounted annual fees?) Thoughts? Tax: 160k, 3yoe, 2 lites, 1 ZR #creditcard #finance

Amex platinum, DM for referral

The credits don’t seem very appealing for $700 a year.

Salesforce bgweyn Dec 21, 2023

They're not. Avoid the Amex platinum. It's a coupon book of hassles

Sapphire Reserve, DM for Referral

Ideally you need both venture X and Sapphire Reserve. Both of those card credits are easy enough to use. Venture X for easy 2x everywhere Sapphire Reserve for 3x on dining and travel. The 1x everywhere is really low on this one so not ideal. Between these 2 cards, your spend is covered and also most points transfer partners are covered. Amex/citi have some exclusive partners that are not covered with Chase/capital one but that should be fine for most people

Venture X is $395/yr and the Sapphire Reserve is $550/yr. Seems like a lot. Unless you can convince yourself you're going to use the benefits enough to justify I'd steer clear. There are freebie cards that give good cashback without needing to jump through all the hoops, or pay annual fees

These cards only make sense for average Joe like us if you can use up the credits. The venture X for example has $300 credit and 10k points every anniversary which make up the annual fee easily. Someone taking 2-3 international trips in a year should easily be able to make use of that. Sapphire Reserve has a bunch of credits beyond the $300 travel credit which may be a little harder to use but it has good travel benefits too. It's definitely a pay to play kinda card

How all these compare to Apple Card? I use that And get cash back

Just get Citi Double. 2% cash back for everything. No annual fee

Cash back is myth where banks charges the merchant and merchant charges you extra and then you get 2% cash back.. Such a loot..

Microsoft pay🥜🥜get🐒🐒 Dec 22, 2023

Like they’d lower prices any if the merchant fees weren’t so high. No they’d just pocket it

Microsoft fh5765 Dec 21, 2023

X1 works best for me with a avg 3% return on everything

Instead of the flood of spam you’ll get from people shilling their referral links for overpriced Amex Platinums and Capital One Venture X’s, I’m going to go against the grain and suggest: Amex Gold. It covers your desired categories: international travel (3x on airfare), grocery (4x) and eating out (4x) categories. No difficult to use coupon book. If you do a couple of Uber Eats or Grubhub pickup orders a month, the annual fee is nearly covered ($10 annual fee after 12x $20 in takeout food credits each month). Decent travel protections and the annual fee doesn’t start to feel like a ripoff if you end up skipping the takeout order one month or a few. Annual fee is discounted $100 if you have a corporate Amex too. I regularly churn cards for free international business class travel but the Gold is good enough deal to be a keeper for me. I pair it with an Amex Blue Business Plus for 2x points on “everything else” that’s not in the Gold 3x/4x categories. DM me if you’d like a referral for either card, I’d appreciate it.
