What are some life lessons you wish you had learned earlier?

My first manager ever was one of those people who would always say comp isn’t everything and that early on in your career you should focus on getting the best experience you can. I bought into it initially since I was a fresh grad making 6 figures what did I care? Then there was a reorg and my new manager came in and we reviewed my body of work and current projects. The next day he pulled me aside and said, “You are way underpaid for what you do here. I’m really sorry you’ve been underpaid this long, but here’s what we’re going to do to fix it.” Literally overnight he increased my TC by 50%. The moral of the story is don’t wait for a reorg that might never happen or wait around and hope that your manager will magically recognize your value one day. tl;dr Know yourself, know your worth.

Always Always believe in yourself, no matter how hard it seems to be.

Like Trump believes in himself?

VMware TechMann Oct 4, 2019

Yes look where he is when he believes in himself. Not believing in yourself is a bad place you don’t want to be in.

Isn't this we call it an "experience"?

Your first manager is shit or a weak manager that cannot get his employees paid. It makes my blood boil when my MD throws words like "with the money they pay us here..." as if we are in it together.

That's such a betrayal. As much as being lowballed angers me, I'm feeling that even though I was paid well, I wish I had richer experiences and opportunities where I could've become Master of one. As of today I feel all my well paying roles have made me a Jack of all trades and master of none.

Kudos to your new manager. And also part of the reason why "TC?" is a thing here. So you know you're getting underpaid
