VMware is being enshittified. Broadcom has killed the business model that made VMware the leading virtualization technology. What are some competitors for VMware products? Is xen still a thing? Proxmox is good for small or medium companies. What competes with vsphere or products for F100s?
Scale Computing
Containers?
Containers and virtualization are two different entities
Lots of options. Redhat, Nutanix, All the cloud vendors, Citrix (if nothing else).
HashiCorp
There is hardly any product as good as the Vmware Esxi in the market. Nutanix and Citrix’s hypervisors have a much much less Marketshare. The scale ESXi can handle is unmatched, even Nutanix CTO was praising Vmware in one of their recent All Hands.
Yeah but most companies don’t come close to needing everything VMware gets you. Broadcom is basically acting like an equity firm. They fired a large portion of the VMware staff and raised prices 2x overnight. I think only the biggest of big needs everything VMware nets you.
Which product prices were raised 2x? They didnt fire a large portion of the Vmware stuff, i dont know how you got this info. Roles that were eliminated were mostly sales, ops, it and hr. Hock Tan has been clear with eliminating redudant roles since the acquisition was done , roughly 1 year ago. There have been very few firing in R&D, mostly MTS1 . AFAIK they have actually reduced the pricing and made the product line simpler for customers to adopt.

I bring this up because Broadcom thinks corporations will just accept paying 2x more for the same products because ‘live services’
