What do I do?

I'm in a miserable job in QA role. I dislike working in this role. I want to explore and try other aspects of engineering specifically SRE/DevOps as I feel I have scope to learn a lot. My manager isn't supportive and I fear he could just cut my role during one of the layoffs and I'm on H1b. I don't care where I work anymore but just need to like what I do and the visa ties are annoying. I hardly get any interview calls even with a tailored resume for these roles. Internal transfer at Cisco is like rolling the dice with my number not even present on the dice. They just hire people they already know from their old companies or their friends' spouses. I do my work well and respected among peers and teams I work with. I try to put myself out there - giving demos of my work, certifications and all that but it's not really getting me anywhere. I just want to leave tech, I guess but that makes me a loser. Though mine is a small problem in this world - I feel for the millions in far worse situations who just want that one chance to prove themselves and lead a nice life. 3yoe, 165k My long term(5y) gf is a US citizen. She suggests that we marry, get the GC and I quit the job. Take a break. And get into a job I like after strong preparation as she can see that I'm hating my life with work. She is not in tech and is naive about this but I feel jobs are not easy with a break. Suggest what I need to do differently.

Do some good courses/bootcamps, get referrals and change jobs. Maybe go as QA in FAANG and then try for a internal transfer

Google has very few roles. Also, didn't get calls even for them. I interviewed for SDE role at Amazon and they offered me QA. I didn't perform great in the interview tbh. So, will attempt again soon after more preparation. Never got a call from Apple SRE or Facebook Prod Engineering roles. I think moving into QA in another company again would put close to 4-5 yoe in that space and make it more difficult to switch.

Its an indirect path, but solves the problem in long term Sometimes you need to build a path to get where you want to
