Genuinely curious: the product is very mature. It’s mostly new contents driven business. There are not much AI needed. For people who didn’t get the point: You can imagine the scale and complexity of content recommendations are completely different at Netflix vs Meta. There are only 1000s of movies available at Netflix in total. There are billions of new posts created everyday at FB. I don’t think Netflix needs much AI for content recommendations. That’s an overkill. Rule based should work just fine. What do they do besides maintenance?
What do Meta engineers work on? Product seems. Very mature. Not much AI needed. Genuinely curious: How much maintenance is needed for a glorified ads delivery system?
We keep improving our recommendation systems. The scale of contents/ads on FB/IG are millions X compared to Netflix. We keep delivering new features, good or bad. I haven’t noticed any significant change on Netflix. Also you got to need engineers to work on open source projects PyTorch, LLAMA etc. And we spend 15B/year on VR/AR. Now you still think not much AI needed?
I guess I haven't noticed because I stopped using Facebook years ago. You guys are doing well financially because people in the prime of their career (captive audience for ad revenue) still use the product. That'll change.
Also how much do they earn on average? Openings on LinkedIn show a huge range of pay for a position. I think I came across a senior engineer position and the range was from around 200k-700k.
I’ve wondered about this for a long time as well. By this point, load balancing should be mostly happening automatically, integrations to new systems should be trivial, etc. I don’t understand the inflated cash comp there
They went to an ad tier. Imagine the kind of work it takes to get the best ad delivery system with minimum degradation of customer experience. Plus, meta seems as mature as Netflix.
I can buy point of new ads system. But I bet most engineers don’t work on ads. What about them?
Microsoft: ads pay the bills to engineers

This is what happens when you hire people based on leetcode. Completely clueless about reality outside of the questions they do.
They need a leader like Elon. Also, I don’t think Netflix deserves to be in FAANG. It’s not a groundbreaking product per se and there’s no innovation. Really bloated compared to HBO Max.
Implying Amazon deserves to be in FAANG...
They can probably go through the Elon treatment and still work fine
This is a genuinely good question that I also want more insight on. Clearly Netflix’s current engineering efforts are not being primarily directed toward new feature or product development, apart from their new Ads tier, so I imagine effort is going into infrastructure. Maybe device integrations are a big part, like casting devices and smart TVs? And performance enhancements for streaming load times, playback speeds, video quality?
You can say the same for meta
I can say the same for any big tech. But Netflix is unique because it’s purely content driven, at least before they have ads.
Well atleast meta has released bunch of products, features, etc. metaverse, AR headset, Instagram and so many more. Netflix has not done squat in last 10 yrs except producing new content
