Netflix used to be the only big player in its industry. Now, HBO, Hulu, Disney plus, et al. have caught up. While Netflix may still be the biggest, it has been losing ground, and objectively speaking, their offering is not at all unique. Netflix pays employees (at least in tech afaik) way more than the rest. Clearly throwing money at the problem hasn't helped them. Clearly being technologically more advanced is not enough. What does Netflix need to do to win again and come back? What can Netflix feasibly do to differentiate itself from competitors, given they have technological upper hand?
They need to get deeper into international markets. US is near saturation.
The interactive stories were stupid. It should've been optional. The addition of mobile games was dumb too.
More edgy shows and cultural relevance like HBO. Less woke stuff, and more Entourage, Succesion, Game of Thrones type of stuff. They cancel shows too fast, without ending the arc and that is super annoying. If the show is not doing that well, maybe have a shorter second season and just close the story arc. People are getting fed up of halfed assed shows. Also, more tent pole movies. I subscribed to HBO Max because Dune and the Matrix were coming out, and their edgy shows. Netflix needs to produce at least 5-6 super quality movies a year (theatre worthy, Warner Bross quality) movies. Disney has cornered the kids market. Netflix needs to follow HBO’s high quality model. The good news is that Netflix has brand recognition world wide, while HBO doesn’t. Also, some short content for mobile is worth pursuing. So, it is a quality problem and not a quantity problem.
I'm legit pissed that they dropped a lot of the marvel TV series that they started.
The marvel stuff wasn't their choice; Disney bought Marvel then refused to renew Netflix contracts
They need to be more picky about the content they put out. A few gems and a lot of mediocre content will lead people to cancel their sub.
Whoever has the best content will win this war. All of the other networks are making their own streaming platforms now. Everyone wants to milk customers as much as possible, and giving Netflix all of their content isn’t gonna give them nearly as much returns. Netflix, and any other platform, can be as cool and creative and innovative as they want, but people are going to go to where the content actually *is*. And Netflix has been losing and losing and losing content over the years while *increasing* their fees! The days of their monopoly are done.
Tech is not even relevant. It's not very hard to launch global scale streaming services anymore. Content is king and it currently sucks.
Why is launching global scale streaming not hard anymore? It’s a different problem space with concentrated peak hour traffic patterns across weird-ass devices and Netflix has a strong head start and clearly ahead of the competition and it’s their tech investment which has enabled that deep penetration. Ofcourse, content is king- be it produced(for media streaming companies) or crowd-sourced(YouTube, TikTok) but you can’t discount their tech or say that it’s ‘easy’ to build what Netflix has built
Better content. Lots of great content just needs good production... Maybe plays from Beckett and absurdist theatre.. we need something interesting...
Market is saturated in North America They need to get shows which appeal to users in Asia and Latin America
sounds like they are literally doing that. so curious how the next year will go
Their current offerings in these regions and globally is very poor tbh
So it sounds like having the upper hand in tech will not help them, because the business is more content based. I guess tech is not very helpful in content, except maybe recommendations. Unless Netflix is somehow comes up with a magical way to use tech to make better content, but that sounds too magical. Global outreach is their best bet as others are saying. The tech could really help them handle global expansion and internationalization much more easily. Netflix still has its superior brand name in the space, but that's only enough to, at best, keep it where its at, if not slow down the downfall.
Netflix player still reigns in playback experience compared to other players
The content sucks. Many people don’t even have the attention span for TV shows anymore. We just stare at tik tok all day
Lol. Literally me. My attention span has gone to shit. Cannot sit through TV shows anymore 😭
