What does high performing E6 Production Engineer look like at FB?

I’m joining Facebook as an E6 Production Engineer. I really want to do a good job so I was curious what the expectations are for that level? Is it true there is an up-or-out policy and that I have a certain amount of time to get promoted or else I’d be fired? Are there career ladders posted anywhere? My first day is in October.

Up or out is usually for below E5, that mentality at E6+ would be kind of ridiculous...

That’s what I thought too. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

Yeah. Is that unusual?

FB doesn't hire for specific team and there are always open roles so they would rather wait for you to join than not have you join at all.

Wowo good lord. YoE? Have you been doing SRE stuff? Congrats!

Been in SRE for about 5 years. And 10 years of infrastructure and infrastructure tooling. Thank you!

Damn nice. That’s appropriate leveling indeed.

Up or out isn’t a thing after E5. You’ll be fine, have conversations with your future manager to set expectations. Welcome to FB.

Thank you!

Is it still a thing for E5, though?

TC ? Is it similar to SWE TC ? How much total/SRE experience do you have ?
