Some smarts, and a whole lot of luck. Helps if you know some high powered execs who can recommend you
This is the highest voted yet IMO a low quality response as it trivializes efforts of those who reached that level. If you think exec recommendations get you to L8 at FANGs, nothing could be farther than the truth (barring exceptions). I’m an L8 at Amazon. Previously L8 at FB (internally promoted). What you really have to do is to imitate what your skip level does and cares about. Go make it happen. The second thing you need to do is to pick projects and teams super carefully. If you don’t think it’ll be huge in the next two years, don’t join the team. Third, you need a whole lot of maturity. You can’t fight every battle, so pick only a couple every year and fix organizational issues etc. Quality over quantity. Lastly, in contentious conversations, know when to “let go”. Also, the thing about luck is, you have to work incredibly hard and smart to get lucky. Luck is like a train. If you don’t make the effort to get to the station, you’re definitely not getting on the train.
💯
Intelligence
Lots of time. Stick around for 8 years and watch everyone leave. Be political. Over promise and throw other people under the bus when you don't meet your goals. Claim as much credit as you can even when it wasn't your idea. Try to manipulate your OKRs so you can always say you over delivered. It's not luck that's going to get you there but old fashioned game playing.
Be tall
I am 6 feet and 8 inches.
Sorry you're too tall.
White? Really?

Are you saying I have to be a good speaker, or suck someone off? I’m not saying no, I’m just asking.
