What does pay range for a role mean?
I am currently interviewing. I asked one of the recruiters (of a large company) for the pay range of the position I am interviewing for and she said 120k-150k. Does it mean that noone in the company in that role will be paid less than 120k or more than 150k? Is that the legal enforceability? Or is the range more like a guidance that applies for most people in that role?
Are you smoking? There’s nothing enforceable! It all depends on bargaining power. Yes there’s a range and it’s unlikely for them to offer lower than that. But might go a bit higher if they really value your talent (which you must demonstrate) and you have some other competing offers. But nobody guarantees anything. All employments are at will.
It means either on average most people in that role earn that much. Or that the recruiter is just supposed to say that.
In California, employers must provide a pay scale for any job that you're applying for. That's a legal requirement.
