What does rest & vest mean?

I used to think it meant that you only worked enough to meet expectations and get a paycheck. I know the "vest" parts literal meaning is stocks vesting, but I thought it was more referring to general income; the word 'vest' was only chosen for the cute rhyme. But after reading a bunch of "best place to rest & vest?" posts it seems like there's more nuance than I originally thought. Examples: https://www.teamblind.com/post/Best-company-to-rest-and-vest-T281qepZ https://www.teamblind.com/post/Rest-and-vest-companies-e437TYqH https://www.teamblind.com/post/Remote-friendly-companies-to-rest-and-vest-r8je5fu3 https://www.teamblind.com/post/Rest-and-vest-tech-companies-GCSVZmsD https://www.teamblind.com/post/Best-company-to-rest-and-vest-VT5LQ1h5 I get all the Salesforce/Adobe mentions, but why is everyone talking about Google and Microsoft? And one of these posts is from a guy who works at Boeing. If that isn't a rest & vest company, what is? This ended up being a little longer than I expected, so I'll emphasize that I want the definition of the term "rest & vest" as it is used on Blind specifically. Edit: Let me be more explicit. If you ask "What are the best companies for rest & vest" you will get a very different set of answers than if you asked "what are the most chill companies to work for". Is that not strange to anyone else? I like the reply about WLB : TC tradeoff. That was my suspicion. Thanks for the serious answer. #rest #vest

You are overthinking it. That’s the opposite of “rest and vest” 😆

Rest and vest places are the companies that have the best wlb : tc trade off. I don’t think Boeing has good tc so it might be a good place to rest but not a good place to vest.

Cannot believe that the phrase “rest” caused an amzn employee’s brain to short circuit :P

Way overthinking it. It means a culture/point in ones career where one does the bare minimum while collecting their sweet paycheck. Not much nuance to it

I think the background is when big companies acquired startups. The acquired folks had little motivation to work after that for the new company but stayed till their options vested. Once that was done, they left for starting another venture..
