I have a good thing going and feel like my managers are acknowledging my potential. Might become a lead in another year or two. I am a high performer and always feel like I should be paid more than now as I deliver a lot more than expected which constantly benefits the team, products & delights customers. However, instead of going that extra mile in hopes of becoming a lead, should I instead join a team / company where the extra mile is already part of the role and the pay is commensurate with that? Is stagnation an indication that I should switch? Will I ever feel stagnated if the manager dangles the “work hard become lead” carrot all the time? #swe #engineering #techlead
If you feel like your stagnating, then your are. I personally think you shouldn’t put your career development in the hands of your company or the manager whispering “I’ll take care of you beau”. I had my fill of managers that make promises they know they can’t deliver on!
Doesn't sound like you are stagnating. If you feel like you are ready to lead and want it immidiately you should switch. If you feel underpaid right now that's definitely something you should consider. However weigh the risks carefully. Ending up in a new a team with a bad manager could seriously set you back career-wise. If you plan on staying talk to your manager and come up with a concrete plan to work towards your goal of becoming a lead.
Well, when you feel like you have stagnated, start doing ML. Every other washed up SE is trying ML to stay relevant
