Wondering what work and careers, related to AI/ML field, are like at Apple under JG's leadership. Seems like they are investing in a lot of new AI/ML hires, and someone said "comp is no longer supposed to be a limitation" for bringing people in. It also seems like the infrastructure is years behind FB, which itself felt years behind Google in many ways. Also wondering, specifically which groups, business/product areas are under JG? Which groups are under his influence? Siri, SPG, TDG, etc? Did he bring kale to Apple's cafes?
Well the hired Goodfellow from us, and he's been known to chase that paper...
If I could build a church to the guy I would.
Can’t tell much about career path as I joined recently but work is interesting and it’s a good time to join Apple in JG’s org. Given things are new and way behind the pro is every new idea is valued. However that is also a con - every bullshit is entertained. If you want to solve a very specific infra problem or like to add an incremental improvement over an established ML problem you might find very frustrated here, but on other hand if you want to define the problem yourself and want to experiment its merit you’ll enjoy it but you have do a lot of work given infra is zero. Also, mindset is still behind and more like of a rest of Apple and value of experimentation, research opportunity and exposure is still not understood properly. JG is doing great work to change few things - for example paper publication is no longer discouraged and there is a good process around it. Rumors about AI/ML hiring is correct. In JG’s org Apple offers comp which is at least at the next level when a candidate have competing offers from other FANGs or unicorns. For eg. I had L5/T5 offers from Fb/G and Apple’s was similar to a good L6/T6 offer although the level in Apple I got was ICT4 which is L5/T5 equivalent.
No real product out of it yet. Still to see whats the real impact of the org.
