I'm thinking of applying for an entry level data scientist position at IBM (graduating with a statistics masters this winter). I'd like to hear first hand what IBM's culture is like for data scientists. What are the teams like? What is distinctive about the culture 9n IBM DS teams? What is the pay like? TC: NA YOE: 0 (transitioning careers)
I was at IBM for 9 years. Problem for data scientist role in IBM is that there are no real customer projects implementing AI solutions. You can get product exposure if you get to bake AI capability in a product. I know so many consultants/sales engineers who just keep working on demo’s with no one buying them
jfc, how does IBm survive then?
^ By selling the legacy software, mainframes and labeling it as cloud or whatever buzzword is trending
By selling vision ;)
DS in IBM is very BU dependent but in general DS is responsible for modelling not project management/databases or whatnot. Look for C&CS or the CIO/CDO type BUs. GBS is hit or miss - some projects with clients are ML heavy and some of them are not - depends on the client maturity and which GBS practice you land in.
I recall data scientists at IBM were practically QA or project managers, not really data scientists. Pay is equivalent to engineers (all base, no RSUs).
