What is the wlb for managers in Amazon? I read terrible stories about developers but how about managers. Are they also put in pip often?
Work 8-8. Fire drills constantly.
What function?
Honestly doesnt sound that bad for L6+
5% of staff from every level is on PIP. Only difference at more senior levels is that no one pushes back and they just retire/leave. For those pointing out no such rule exists: You aren’t senior enough to know the shit (correctly so IMO) HR and VPs are putting leaders through this cycle. We need to showcase why the % LE is lower for higher levels and so high for L4s and L5s. You will hear about this by mid cycle.
That is not true. I'm an L7/M2 and have not had someone at "Least Effective/LE" or on PIP in the last 2 years. The 5% came from other peer teams at my Director's level so I've never had to "force" anyone within my team into that rating bucket. Even more, the suggested curve moves upwards as well. I moved an L4 H3 to TT because they were on the edge and there weren't enough TTs at L4 at the Director's level after all talent reviews were completed.
That’s not what I meant. I stated that 5% of staff from every level is on PIP.
I see some managers brag about putting extra hours in leadership meetings. That is nothing to brag about. With good time management, managing expectations and not setting unrealistic deadlines, you can have a good wlb as a manager and your employee. There are occasional fires but that is more manageable. I do all this and my engineer still quits so don't listen to my advice. 😔
I don't have WLB only "work life harmony". Which means AWS is eating my soul in exchange for a lot less $$ than I could get elsewhere. Wait a second....
😂
They use the same phrase at chewy. Most leadership is from amazon!
Curious what goes into a manager getting PIP’d? A lot of people saying political reasons but I imagine there is a lot more to it and it may not be as doom and gloom as folks make out.
regretted attrition, failure to deliver, repeated preventable COEs, etc. SDMs do go down for purely political reasons though there's usually an underlying weakness in such situations.
They could also get screwed for bad doc writing/communicating with leadership
I personally know three L6 managers who left Amazon just because of WLB. Two of the mangers were former managers of mine.
Looks like amazon needs a union more than google. LOL
50-60 hours consistently tons of pressure. Been at Amazon 4 years now. L6 SDM.
