I really would like to get into the data science world more. I love data and automation and AI and ML and all that stuff. I also know that a good role can be very good paying too. But right now I’m just looking for something that’s in the $120-$130k range in the Midwest. So background, I have a masters in applied economics. 31 years old. - I’ve worked for several Fortune 500 companies. - I have working experience with SAS and SQL. 2 years of SQL. I’ve only written queries to pull data, written my own code and saved it for weekly reports. For SAS it’s mostly proc SQL and Proc sort kind of stuff. Some If and else statements. - have some alteryx experience as well. Used to manage a huge workflow that someone created that exported to SQL and Power BI. Not an expert. Probably beginner- intermediate. I can create some fairly simple to medium complexity workflows on my own. - have course knowledge of Python. Understand numpy, pandas, Mattplotlib, a little bit of Seaborn. Have never used it for work but would LOVE to. It’s just something that interested me so I decided to learn. -currently going through the IBM Data Science professional certificate through Coursera. Really would like some guidance and suggestions on where to go or what jobs to apply for. I’ve applied for some senior data analyst roles, market analytics, strategic analytics, operations analyst, insights analyst. I’d love to apply for data scientist roles but I don’t think I’ll qualify.
I think you're already applying to the right jobs. Most of the data scientists that I know personally didn't start with the title of "Data Scientist", they started in marketing, quantitative psychology, computational linguistics, etc. so it's perfectly fine to apply to the roles you're applying to now and you'll eventually be able to switch to "data science" if you want to, but you'll be doing similar things in both roles. The only thing you need to be wary of is to avoid jobs that have you doing mostly SQL or setting up BI dashboards. Those are not really analytics jobs and wouldn't help you get the experience you need to move towards the data science roles.
Yeah I e been applying for those roles but have gotten nothing so far. Not sure if it’s because of my lack of skills or if the market is just that bad and I’m being out competed by like candidates from MIT with PhD in quantum computing lol
It's probably just the market really. I don't see the MIT PhDs going for the roles you mentioned very frequently. I'm also on the East Coast so the local market is probably pretty different compared to the Midwest.
You need to be a team player. We can try to put you in for VP next year.
This hits too close to home for me. As an ex-PNC employee
Dude I can’t stand my boss and frankly will never expect my boss to ever promote me…. Als for those that don’t work at JPMC, a VP doesn’t really mean much here lmao. Everyone and their grandmothers are VPs lol
This sounds like somebody on my team. He’s a good utility player but likely makes under $120k. My advice - look for data analyst roles (internal or external). In your interview talk about what you’ve done - and as you close in on an offer (or post offer, during negotiations) ask how long to become a VP. If it’s longer than a year … then OK to leave.
Not that many data analyst roles where I’m at. A lot of them in India, Plano, or Jersey. I also don’t expect much of a raise at all since I’ll probably be moving laterally in the job grade.
Apply for the Plano and Jersey roles - don’t be turned off by location, but tell them you want to stay local. If they like you, they’ll be OK
How does one prep for interviews what are the rounds like ?
