I recently started working at a company that’s in the process of getting acquired by Facebook. My employer will become a Facebook company just like WhatsApp and Instagram. They’ve notified one of the departments that their jobs will become redundant in 12-18 months after acquisition. I haven’t been told anything specific about my role or my department. I am afraid of job security, even more afraid to ask this because I’m new. Does Facebook do mass layoffs for acquired companies or place them somewhere else in Facebook? How is it like to work at a company under the Facebook umbrella? Anything else I should consider/know about? #tech #acquisitions #facebook
I haven’t worked for an acquired company. But acquired companies can have varying integrations from companies like Instagram that are indistinguishable from FB versus some oculus game studio which is clearly not deeply integrated. There was an acquired startup I knew that had many of the team members move teams.
Did you know that Facebook was acquiring your company before you took the position? It seems as a PM that you should be able to find another role within FB if your product group starts dissolve. Pay attention to what other team members are doing. I suspect the departments given notice were HR, accounting and other administrative groups. When Disney bought my partner's company in 2019/2020 almost 90% of the staff were released (decent severance package) with those remaining being primarily minorities and women. When Google acquired Picnic a decade ago, at the end of the year almost all Picnic employees had left, a few voluntarily, but most released. Again, pay attention to what is going on around you, not to what management is saying as they will be trying to save their own jobs (not yours).
That Disney stat sounds like they should get sued if true.
I knew about the acquisition at the time of hiring. They also sent a letter with RSU offerings. What I didn’t know until now is that they were making a department redundant. No one talks about it here. I’m not sure why. I asked a few people and they pretty much deflected the topic. I’m in Product so I feel I could settle into Product at Facebook but I don’t know how they do internal transfers like these.
Anything is possible, are you part of the core product at your company? At the worst you get a fat severance check, better start leetcoding now.
Yeah I’m part of the core product team here.
Zuck wants your job
