My friend mentioned that L5 can reaches to half million per year total compensation. But when I searched on google. It mentions the L4 ranges 133k-171k and L5 ranges from 170k-198k. quite confused. If L4 can reaches 200k, i really should think of moving from Finance to Tech then
What’s your current TC? Also from what I’ve seen Google L4 easily gets 230k and tops out around 300k. If you’re looking for TC 200k+ then pretty much any big tech company can pay that.
How much does a senior engineer make at mongodb?
L4 easily reaches 200k if you have competing offers. L5 is very variable because the range is basically unlimited, I know someone who works at Google who doesnt want to be promoted because of leadership aspects but he owns some very specific components in Google Pay and his compensation is 500k+ and that too in India due to stocks. However this kind of salaries for L5 you probably wouldnt get as a new hire only when you work inside google and do good/great work.
My guess is 90%+ of L4 have over 200k+ TC, with a median around 240-250k.
Hi OP. Former finance guy who transitioned to tech years ago. I remeber being as blissfully ignorant about tech salaries as you are. Here is what you need to know: 1)Those numbers aren’t accurate 2) Those numbers are relatively close to the SALARY data for those roles. Tech employees often make just as much and sometimes more in annual bonuses and equity depending on their level. 3)there is a website called “levels.fyi”. I used to be really ignorant and didn’t realize that people were giving me an actual URL. Type that in the URL and you will go to a website that guves self reported salary data at the big tech companies. 4) When you get to the site, ignore the colored boxes on the homepage. You want to click on the drop down arrow on the top right and then click compensation. This will give you individual salary submissions which are much easier to analyze. 5) when you see a submission, this is what it means: $259,000 (big font) = total annual comp 160k/ $75k / $24k = $160k annual salary / $75K annual equity RSUs / $24k annual performance bonus 6) Tech is where it’s at. If you are smart enough to work in finance, you can make the jump to tech.
OP the salaries you are seeing do not take into account bonus and more importantly stocks which can be as much or more as the base salaries depending on the level. We are late to know this, but get this for sure. Levels.fyi is accurate and tech salaries >>>> finance salaries specially for tech people (Non pnl)
People will consider 200K L4 offer as lowball nowadays.
The numbers you quote seem to be base salary only. If you add bonus and stock grants, you're at 2.5x that.
Don’t make the move cuz of TC, you will not be happy in the long term. Make the move because tech is exciting. Or you fancy a change.
