What level swe should I apply for?
Have 4 YOE total, 3 years as tech cofounder of two stem startup but no exit. 1 year as SWE II in series C startup looking to get promoted within the next year to SWE III but ladder doesn’t transfer to others on levels.fyi. BS and MS in engineering but not CS from top engineering universities. Want to apply for the faangs for higher tc. Remote position only. Likely L4. L5 is possible, but it will be a difficult sell even if you do excellently on your interviews.
Does SWE III mean Senior Software Engineer at your company? If that’s the language of your title, push the recruiter to interview you at the L5 level. Just make sure to learn system design interview skills along with LC. I did this and got 3 L5 offers with 4 YOE. I also went to a no name state school and had no great companies on my resume, so you definitely can do it.
At these big companies, L4 means you are a competent solo engineer who can build anything. L5 has more to do with collaboration, leading, and mentoring. L6 is full on leading from a high level and mentoring everybody even mentors with some coding.
