Seems like senior security engineers working in MANGA are making 3-500k TC like SWEs but what about tier 2 and 3 companies? What should a senior security engineer make at places like Chime, Airbnb, Stripe, Carta, Coinbase, Affirm, etc? What’s the best resource for security salaries? Levels.fyi doesn’t have much security salaries and job sites like LinkedIn and Indeed estimates security positions make 100-150k for any levels between senior to staff.
Top tech companies basically pay the same for SDE/SWE and SecEng. Amazon pays about 20% higher but that's an outlier. My recent offer from Coinbase was ~375k in Seattle which is the same as what they pay SWE/SDE.
Did you need to LC at Coinbase?
No… I don’t code
Can you elaborate what exactly that you do as a security engineer ? Most of the security engineers in my company use third party tools to integrate in the CI/CD process which is I feel like can be done by anyone other engineer.
I will do security code reviews, security architecture, threat modeling and sometime pen testing
security code reviews manually or using some kind of a tool ? Same question for pen testing. Do you write any code as a part of security engineer ?
security engineer at tier 2 and below are not the same job as in tier 1. more like sysadmin. expect salaries one grade below eng bands. i think you’d have to go to comparably or glassdoor for security eng salary data
165K or so for me at SAP. 12 YoE
What is MANGA?
Zendesk pays about $120k for a Senior Security Engineer, unless in Bay Area. 🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜
Whats their bay area pay?
10 peanuts
Security Engineers are the same as other engineers at Brex. The target for Senior is 400k.
TC or base? What about professional level (non-senior)?
TC, but Brex is choose your own split. Check levels.
senior at coinbase is around 425k and you can get up to 600k if you get a top rating, airbnb also pays around that but doesn’t have as large performance multipliers (although there are refreshers)
I worked at both MAMMA and non-MAMMA for senior security engineer and the difference isn’t that much. Depends on experience, levels, location etc What’s your current TC and YOE? I’m hitting 430k after 8 YOE for point of reference
200k TC 9 YOE but I bombed LC from Google and a few other companies. Should I focus more on LC, systems design or application security to up my TC?
LC and applications security would be my recommendation
