Have a call with a hiring manager at a company I'm considering. What questions do you usually ask to get a better grasp of team/culture fit, work (life balance), challenges, etc.
Their TC
I'll try this and report back
Ask about the culture and find out their management style. Avoid joining a toxic team as it will just make you regret the move later.
I find just asking culture is a poor indicator. Everyone's inclined to say our culture is great. Is there a more specific way to phrase it?
How often are team lunches? How often do people wfh/oncall/overtime? What team members are working on/progress on projects When people come in/leave office Idea is indirect questions as managers will give bs answer to direct questions like what is ur management style/what is culture
It depends on what’s important to you. Think about the things that made you look for a new job. Phrase your questions in a non-direct way to get honest answers rather than sales fluff. For example: Say your current manager doesn’t do 1-1s and you like frequent 1-1s. Rather than asking Do you do 1-1s, I would ask: What do you like to discuss during 1-1s? How many 1-1s have you done in the last month?
Broadly: company level, team level and individual level. Company level: ask about things like company strategy and how team fits into it. Team level: ask about how your role fits into team. At individual level, ask about career growth. Etc.
Thanks!
