PM Manager, early 40s, married and ENM (Ethical Non Monogamous) AMA
Recently moved to US for a job in startup, husband didn’t got the lottery so he had to leave his job and came on H4. Startup didn’t gave any relocation no help in any way, so spent quite a lot In flights, relocation, staying in hotels until got a house, and stuff which is on the way from movers. I was pip’ed a month ago, that was already alarming. Reason was, not great achievements in sprint. I was relocating and didn’t got any leaves from company, only leave I took was when I was actually on the plane and had no network so that is clear I had some some tasks which I could not finish in respective sprint. I achieved the goals with excellent feedback from manager after pip. Right after moved to a more aligned team, it’s not even a week in this team and this morning I was let go saying that company was hit financially. 2 other colleagues got let go as well. Since I had no credit history in US I paid 6 months advance to get this apartment, spouse is on H4. I only have 2 months I guess to figure things out, my stuff from movers is already on the way. It’s heartbreaking but I need to find a way out from this situation. I know many people has been laid off and it’s really not great time to get laid off but I am open for suggestions how people are keeping in sane and how difficult is it to get a job? I’m a fullstack software engineer(Frontend focused) with 10years experience. I would appreciate if any of your company is hiring and if you can refer me. 🙏🏻 I had an interview scheduled with Apple but haven’t heard back from the recruiter
Definitely reach out to consultancies… 2 months not enough time to find job at big companies, try otta it has some good startup jobs listed and can hear back quickly
Feel sorry about the situation and I wish you come out of this.. wish you the best. However, why did you relocate in this climate and why did you have to move all the stuff ? I mean you could have simply come and bought a few things like a bed, couch etc … and waited for things to settle down …
The time I got my h1b picked up, I already started wrapping things up with my previous employer and I had plenty of calls coming in from US, I thought if I’ll be there I can find a suitable job in few months but while I was in transition layoffs cycle started but it was already too late for me since I had nowhere to go other than follow this job
Do not apply for fulltime roles now. If you are in 60 days grace period consultancies will only save you. Fulltime jobs are slow and are prone to ghost you bad. I assume most of your experience is in India. You will be facing tough competition with many locals who are well experienced working in USA, trust me there are several thousands in this category. To save your visa and your dependent visa only escape for now is consultancies.
Thank you 🙏🏻 Yes, I’m reaching out to consultancies as well and also startups, hope to hear from them soon. I have worked in india only beginning of my career and was out of india for past 7 years, I have also worked for the same org remotely before moving to US.
Sorry to hear this. You can look for contract jobs with consultancies, they can transfer your h1b. This too shall pass
