I’m relative new in my career and I’m unsure what I need to talk to with my manager in my 1:1s. We have daily stand ups so he does know what I am working on on a daily basis. Also he keeps cancelling our 1:1s. I’m confused as to how to take charge of my career. And how to work towards a promotion. He hasn’t really set an goals for me for this year.
Next time when you meet with him, tell him that you need to discuss something in 1:1 and then discuss in 1:1 about what you want to discuss
Create short term and long term goals for yourself and share them with your manager. Also, ask what KPIs you are measured against and what it would take for you to get promoted. Then, in follow up meetings ask for general feedback and how you are doing towards promotion. Come with questions and areas you may need help. You’re responsible for organizing talking points for a 1:1, and if your manager is cancelling... then it’s not a good sign.
Why is it not a good sign ?
Wait what? I I think it is managers job to figure out what to talk about in 1-1s. I mean you can bring your concerns to him/her sure but overall she is driving. A manager cancelling 1/1s is a sign of a manager who is not appreciating her responsibilities for people she is leading.
Talking about politics is always fun 😄
Managers should hold to their 1:1s to show they value their ICs time. Also, ICs should be shown the team goals and priorities. What is your team trying to accomplish in the next six months?
That just wastes time. Do one project well and then about in front of everyone and you’ll get promoted
Not everyone feels the way you do. Many people get a lot of value with face time from their leadership.
Refer the checkin section on Inside. If you are new, you are supposed to have a goal setting check in.
1:1s are meant to be about things beyond day to day work. Figure out your goals and talk to him how to approach them. Ask him about areas where you can improve to meet these goals. Come up with action items after every meeting. If it helps schedule 1:1s monthly or once in two months so you have some progress in between
1/1s should be mandatory weekly

Your manager doesn't set goals. Taking charge is setting your own goals. 1-1 shouldn't be a status meeting, as you said you have standup every day for that. Talk about problems you've run into in your job. Early in your career some things aren't going well, that's part of learning. Talk to your manager about how you can improve your weaknesses
