Is it that sales is the actually act of helping customers buy the right product they need and marketing is about advertising? I’m an engg and would appreciate if someone can give a description of these two. Also, how do they differ and how impoertant are they for a company like Uber? how about for NextDoor?
Sal Marketing tries to create a pipeline; sales tried to close it.

Marketing and sales work very closely. Marketing team’s job is to take care of ad campaigns and on-field marketing (conferences) which will turn into leads and will be passed onto sales. It is then Sales teams job to covert these leads into clients. Without a marketing team, sales has to personally reach out seeking prospects. Marketing provides leads which chose to engage with you whether it be by clicking on an ad, signing up for newsletter or stopping by your both at a conference. Marketing is important for any company selling services or products...unless you are selling like crazy and can’t handle it (in that case you might not want to spend money on marketing).
Thanks for the great description. In the case of a company like AirBnB, what functions do marketing and sales do? Do they have any such departments? If not, how do they get ppl to rent their real estate and what kind of departments do they use to get customers for such real estate?
You’re welcome! Unfortunately I don’t know much about how Airbnb’s marketing dept looks like specifically. But airbnb does advertise despite being so popular. It also hosts a lot of events for its power hosts which are managed by marketing.
