What's enough income in Bay area for a family of three?

TC: 165k base, 160k rsus/ 4yr, 30k sign, 10% bonus and relo
First year comp: a little over 250k

If I take the position, I'll be moving from East coast with wife and newborn and m trying to determine if this is enough to live comfortably in the Bay area.

I will be the sole income, but we won't need to pay for child care. Schools aren't a concern because I plan to move back to East coast after a few years. We don't care much about having nice cars or expensive clothes and with a newborn we probably wouldn't be eating out more than once a week if even although probably a lot of take out.

I'd be working out of Sunnyvale/Cupertino and the things I do care about are a 15-25 min commute and a house or townhouse with 3br. I also want to make sure I can still save for retirement.

Is this possible on this income? The more I read the harder it is to know.

At that base, you'd be living paycheck to paycheck if in a 3bd place! RSU income is what you'll save, net of taxes.

Shorter commute, longer office hours. Pick your poison

You can do a quick check on Zillow for rent.

I did a quick search and a townhouse within 15-20 mins of commute to Apple campus (assuming the main campus) is about $5400 a month

I’d say after tax, rent and all the living expenses, it will be hard to save but you’ll get better commute and better weather

Good luck and welcome to California

You will live comfortably. You are going to come here and never going to go back to east coast. You have been warned.

True, we came from east coast "temporarily" too... You won't go back, specially because you have kids. Just start saving as much as you can for a down payment.

Yes , it’s good income . Given your needs and projected lifestyle, here’s what I think. Almost half of monthly pay would go towards rent. And probably another 1/4th towards all other expenses. You should have 1/4th (around 1.8k maybe) balance in your account. Good luck !

Less than $500k makes you feel pretty tight, unless you don’t care about savings.

Yup... Irvine - lots of blue ribbon schools. Unless you live near the airport which falls in santa ana school district.

If he adds 3 in his tax exemptions that might give him 5 - 8% tax benefits. Still his insurance costs may go high which is also accountable for pre tax if i m not wrong. But still he has to find cheaper housing options which apparently is impossible near that neighborhood. At max he can save 15 - 20% of his base salary (considering there are no surprise expenses)

It is certainly possible. Not having to pay daycare helps

Yeah, that was Volvo who asked how hard would it be if the daycare is needed. We don’t know how old would be Volvo’s kids or where he would live in the Bay Area, therefore the band is pretty broad.

What is your YOE? What is your current comp and location? Might be better to guage if you have a good offer and how it compares cost of living wise to San Fran.

10 to 20k pre tax increase. Your rent is post tax increase in your spending. In my case I might need 40k increase in TC jus to match monthly expenses in Bay Area if I move from Seattle.

Amazon usually doesn’t even give out refreshers lol.. because they factor stock appreciation in to ur comp.
      Aug 28, 2018
    • Amazon hsl44428q
Amazon almost always gives refreshers unless you are WAY over band. Given our stock performance we are earning drastically more than an equal leveled Apple employee.

You will definitely change your lifestyle. I lived in East Coast for 12 years and move Bay Area 6 years ago. At the beginning you will feel poor. The sense that the money will never be enough. Then you adjust your lifestyle and start enjoying less of the consumerism of East Coast and enjoy free nature and nice weather of West Coast. Also, after a while you will save more money here because there are better RSU’s around here and many perks that makes your cost of living cheaper. Today I save a lot more compared to what I had in East Coast. And remember, if you are good here you can make some good money.
