Amazon is no longer the Amazon we all knew back in the days until since couple years !! Not even an employer who takes care of employees. Culture depriving - I am a Bar Raiser. The main reason I became one was to stay connected with the roots (LPs), but I don’t see the culture in day to day anymore but just during interviews/debriefs and OLRs. Takes back money saying stocks grown last year so we won’t pay you this year 😂 Only grow who you like or build family to grow each other Lots and lots of loopholes!! Pip is not really by performance but by managers monopoly! It’s no good for new hires or external hires!! TC 2024 : 320k TC 2025 : 240k 🤩 (you see 2024 TC spike due to stock outperformance will help you feed for 2025…. If you want to stay 🤣) Have external offers in hand, waiting for May vesting 🐣
Amazon underestimates how much it has alienated and pissed off employees, and overestimates how bad the external job market is right now. I am getting and taking interviews almost every week. By the time the data reflects a huge move on external movement it will be too late. The current data doesn’t reflect quiet quitting and decreased productivity. By the time the data does reflect churn it will be too late as tens of thousands will have left or be mentally checked out with a foot out the door. RTO was bad but really only adversely impacted those who moved far away from their offices. Many of us lived near an office and were ready to return. But screwing over everyone on pay this year thoroughly upset practically every employee, and the confidence gained from RTO was misplaced with this move. The worst part is it will be the best people leaving first and only the new and the worst will remain behind. Saving pennies today to lose dollars tomorrow. What happened to thinking long term? Day 2.
Which companies are you getting interviews with ? I'm starting to look soon
RTO enforcement has already fallen off. Apparently the automated manager SIMs have quietly been rolled back.
They have ended up with Day2 is death culture. Please quit for mental peace.
People say the same about G and MS and the likes. Reality is no company cares about its employees. In good times they just pretend to. As far as international relo is considered, I guess it doesn’t make sense given PERM is paused. So most of the L1s have to go back anyway. What’s the point of bringing people only to send them back after 5 years? Also there’s a flood of available candidates within Amazon US (we received 20 reaumes in 3 days), so it defies common sense to pay for international relocation.
Basically all visas are temporary, which they should be by design. While not pushing PERM isn't a good thing, I imagine that lots of people would still happily spend 5 years in another country to experience a new place, earn more money, etc.
Yea I mean, if the position is based in the US, and plenty of qualified people need jobs in the US, why shouldn’t we be prioritizing hiring citizens
In my org 80% of SDMs left/changed teams in about one year. Few joined our org, and left after 4 months. I reached them on LN to ask what happened, response was - I did not expect this is so much a shitshow. All SDEs are in energy saving mode and just do oncalls. Few are actually working on projects. Most due to being locked on Visa. Exciting times in front of us…
Amazon has been dying internally for a long time. The only reason it wasn't apparent was because they paid a lot during the ZIRP era. People were ok with BS because they got paid. Now that ZIRP is no more and people are not getting paid, that BS is no longer acceptable. Leading to rapid attrition. A lot of people would rather be unemployed than work at Amazon.
ZIRP? Zero interest Something something?
@datadog - I know you are still living in 2021 but reality in 2024 is there’s no “rapid” attrition. In fact there’s zero attrition everywhere which is why they are laying off.
I had this wake up call almost 2 years back and quite happy as well as content that I left AMAZON after working for 8 years almost. The company is run by SDM who consider them as God and try to run the show as per there wish.
Absolutely! Our pe left because the SDM wanted to follow the direction of the pyramid building boss to building AI into everything. The sdms are only interested in politics and selecting their quota for pip.
Can’t tell if trolling or serious die-hard Amazonian
I think it's well beyond day 2. I left Amazon last year after almost 8 years. Amazon is now run by smart-ass Indian SDMs (I am an Indian myself) who think that customers don't know what they want and build weirdly complex and useless products that no one wants to use. They don't listen to customers and are exceptional at arguing in weirdly complicated ways.
😅 the arguing part is even more visible if it’s a Indian female SDM.
"... and are exceptional at arguing in weirdly complicated ways" Jesus Christ this is my experience exactly.
+1 on PIP, if you are not good with your manager then you are in trouble. They never care about deliverables. Amazon should remove no-hire policy, it makes no sense now.

Cannot agree more. I've been here almost five years, and it's amazing just how far things have sunk. What amazes me the most, which few touch on, is how Amazon are actively against international hires now. We're still laying thousands off, while hiring thousands, and denying transfer opportunities to workers. I know it's a meme here, but the one big benefit that Amazon had over other tech companies was freedom of movement, and now all roles are basically "external only" or "external and domestic only". So many people are (still) joining from India because they want to move to Europe or the US, only to find out once they're here that international moves are dead. Alongside this, Amazon is bleeding talent. In the last year alone I've watched L6 and L7 IC's leave en-masse, with several L5 SDE's choose to leave when promos or moves were denied. We've had four re-orgs in ads THIS YEAR, and that's all because people are leaving and because managers need a certain number of directs. Sadly, knowing how politics works at Amazon, I reckon our teams that received directs from elsewhere to bump manager direct numbers will likely pay that back by PIPing lots of people. That sums up politics in Amazon right now. Finally, the hard problems aren't really here any more. Four years ago you could go to any number of teams and work on hard problems in lots of industries. Nowadays, teams are just shoehorning AI into everything, moving things into KTLO, or maintaining. Hell, everyone worships Ads here, but our tech stack is straight from the 2000's, and we're fighting to maintain whatever profit we make while trying to keep legacy tech alive. I've worked in banks and government with more exciting tech. We're excited here if we get to use SQS... In short, don't join. Aside from TC there's no reason to join, especially since you won't see that TC due to URA or layoffs...
💯💯💯
Even sadder when you consider AMZ's TC is low in FAANG and for some job families it can even be just as good as the general industry. Glad to have a big name on my resume finally but man if hiring outside ever ramps up again I can't wait to get out
