I have an upcoming interview with a small/med PE firm with ~1B AUM. Want to know from other SWEs who are in the space if they'd recommend it. The recruiter gave me a vague comp structure of a decent base salary with yearly bonuses that can go up to 50%. How common is this TC structure, and how often do these high bonuses actually happen? All answers are welcome! Thank you in advance Current TC: 150K Expected TC: base 150k + bonuses #interview #finance #privateequity #PE #swe
Base + Bonus is common in finance. You didn't state your YOE, but I'll expect it to be about 50K.
Currently eng lead at a big VC/PE shop. All cash comp, with year-end bonus goes up to 50% or more of base. Without RSUs or equity that's all they can offer, unless you're extremely senior, at which point they offer carried interest in their funds.
How consistent are the bonuses? And how much is it team/company based vs. individual ?
They generally give you a first-year target bonus number. There might be some variance around that number depending on how well the firm did that year, but never too much for backoffice/tech roles (bad year -20% on that number, good year +20% on that number, etc.). They'll be unnecessarily secretive about that final number ("Bonus is discretionary and not guaranteed") until year-end, but unless the fund is falling apart you'll get your bonus. For backoffice eng roles, generally the bonus is by level, set at end of year. Your individual performance has some bearing but not a whole lot.

What do you even do as an SWE in a private equity firm?
