What’s the culture like at Netflix?

How’s the work and WLB? What aspects are you happy about? What do you dislike most?

tl; dr: The work is challenging. The work life balance is great. The culture is generally good, no egos. There are some challenges we face with how we structure our organizations (levels), but I think it can be good. A very positive vote from me. I work out of our LG office, and can speak from how I've seen Engineering. Work for me is challenging and fulfilling. I work with great people (on my team, and just at Netflix in general). I don't have to worry about egos or challenging an idea becoming a whole situation. People generally are very welcoming and nice. 99%+ of engineering is colocated out of LG on a single campus. It's also one of the most diverse and inclusive companies I've worked at. It was that way before we took a more active look at how we can continue to improve it, and so it doesn't feel like we are reacting to a change and more that honestly we did it before it was cool because it was the right thing to do. It's the most WLB I've had in the Bay, where I don't generally work past 5:30PM (unless I am on-call and was paged, which is not common outside of business hours). I am strongly encouraged by my direct supervisor to take time off to refresh. And I also have opportunities to release my own internal projects as open source, which can be great if I am proud of work I do and think others may find it useful. I'm not afraid of losing my job, or just suddenly/unexpectedly being fired, and I am confident that those around me will give me actionable feedback so that I can continue being successful at Netflix. A blessing and a curse is there is no leveling of individual contributors. We are all the same level, but our pay is specific to our role, experience, and skillset. So an IC can't try and pull rank on you, generally most supported idea wins. So you do things by building consensus. This does mean that there are no true architect/principal engineering type roles. That isn't to say you can't have that sort of impact, because you totally can, you just need a good idea and some marketing to do it successfully. Top-down is not a thing. So if you want this sort of role, Netflix may be limiting. Oh, and other companies provide much better training for those who are new managers or want to be managers. I've heard of people going to other FAANG companies just to learn to become a manager before coming back to Netflix.

If I am not mistaken, ICs can still obtain the designation of being a Director.
