Looking at the Twitter layoffs, people laid off from the ‘ML ethics’ or ‘AI Ethics’ are good riddance. The entire field is a scam and those people were being paid for nothing. Why do we need to think about ethics in AI? Social media companies like Meta and Twitter earn through advertisement. The product is free, and their business model is to use AI, learn what will attract you and show you those ads. Think of that as the price for using the product. Don’t want AI showing you relevant ads? Quit the app — they didn’t force you to use it and you don’t pay for it. And I have no clue why woke people think Twitter or FB has to think about them or work for the good of humanity — they are a private company who’s goal is to make money. Don’t agree with what they do? Show them by quitting their product. If enough people quit, they’ll rectify. If enough people didn’t quit, too bad — looks like not that many cared. Thanks for attending my Ted Talk. TC: 300k
They were good for marketing. When the market was bullish and money was free, companies wanted to score woke points to attract more advertisers. The AI ethics folks ran an incredibly well orchestrated campaign to bully everyone into submission and label the disobediences as racists/sexists, specifically targeting prominent figures like Yann Lecun and Jeff Dean to raise their own profiles. It’s a scam, but also genius marketing, so all credits to them. Of course over the long term people will see through their plays. The bear market just accelerates this process. It’s fascinating to watch, really.
OP watch the Social Dilemma on Netflix it’ll make sense why we need such people. God bless and have a blessed weekend
I’ve watched it and I disagree with it. I don’t see the point. Like if you don’t want Facebook targeting you, don’t use it. They never claimed they were operating out of the good of their heart and to benefit you.
Facebook also tracks people who don't use the website though. If you go to a website that has anything embedded from Facebook they will track you.
they should have listened to this guy named Elon Musk before laying off those people, and so should you https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/896166762361704450
another tweet for the road https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/495759307346952192
Too bad none of the AI ethics people at big tech actually works on real AI threats. They are too busy tweeting about diversity and inclusion.
right because there's never been any ethical problems with any application of AI or ML ever right? 🙄
AI ethics is not about wokeness. It is about auditing AI systems for harmful behavior in general. It is about taking that step beyond asking if you can make something, to ask whether you should make something. AI ethics provides tangible business value. Imagine the harm to a brand if they release a new AI image generator and it is used to make explicit images of minors, for example. Microsoft released a chat bot called Tay a few years ago that quickly became racist, homophobic, antisemitic, the whole lot. Now maybe you don't care and think that's just fine, but plenty of consumers out there would not like to do business with a company that promotes such behavior. Look at Adidas dropping Kanye after his recent behavior. Corporations tend to want safe and stable income, not high risk, edgy products to own the libs. You can direct yourself to 4chan if that's what you're looking for.
No one actually care, adidas dropped Ye just because it is scared of the consequences, not because they care. If not they wouldn’t use child labour and pollute, but yes a tweet from a mentally ill rapper is taken seriously, come on wake up. I am not against diversity, nor racist or that stuff, but at the same time l am against hypocrisy!
OP good points, but those should be under the scope of PMs. AI is commodity nowadays, there is nothing special about it that would require an “AI ethics team” that PMs cannot do.
I assume the main reason for it is so we can regulate ourselves. If we don't do this then government might do it for us.
Good riddance. Most AI ethics teams are virtue signaling woke snowflakes and filled with diversity hires. These people provide no value to shareholders or customers.
it blows my mind every day that companies like Google hire idiots like this. Then again, it really doesn't surprise me
Its ok that you failed google interview. They are hard. No need to be salty about it.
"in a crash, should a self driving car prioritize the life of its driver over a crowd of pedestrians? If so, how much risk to the driver is necessary to justify risk to others?"
This problem is too difficult for the AI ethics folks at big tech, so they focus on tweeting instead.
You must be dreaming if you think the AI ethics teams deal with remotely anything complex like this. Look at the laid off blue haired twitter ML leader's acheivements. She organized a bounty challenge to find bias. That's it. Some automatic photo cropping algorithm apparently chose to focus white faces more. World shattering injustice.
Ai bias is just reflecting society biases. So any ethics or monitoring is just bunch of people pushing their bias on what is reality of the world
Lol...I think this is the entire heart of the problem...
You’re clueless
Or you’re just a snowflake
Nope OP is clueless
