Recruiter said there is no way they could do above 160 TC. And when I asked for details they said they won't tell me breakdown until I agree to the number. For L5 Wde2. I have 7 years of experience, 1 year of leadership in that. Am I being lowballed or am I being greedy? This is in Seattle.
That's the max base comp target for an L5. Is this all in base comp or base and RSU grant combined?
I don't know, the recruiter said she can't share breakdown until I agree to it. I told her I needed to discuss with my SO and I'd get back to her.
It sounded like this was base + signing + RSU on the phone though.
I don’t think WDE is the same “tier” as SDE. Isn’t WDE basically a subset of SDE?
Smells like bullshit. If you have another offer or choice you should tell them you're not going to play games. Heck, even if there isn't another offer you should push back on them. Not breaking it down means you don't have enough information to tell them yes or no.
Yeah so, if 160 is your TC then it isn’t “low-ball” per se but def not top of the band either. Also, at Amazon WDE are paid substantially less than SDE. SDE 2 TC is generally 190-240; WDE is 130-180. Source: am a full-stack, called “WDE” at Amazon, and am gonna bounce for FB the *second* the last of my signing RSU’s vest later this year if Amazon doesn’t fix this shit, like, this cycle...
^ This. SDE is the only high paying job family which includes SDET. Everyone else’s comp range is lower by 15-25%. That said @OP how does it compare to your current comp ?
Scaled for COL my current comp is around 130. So it's definitely a nice increase, just not what I expected.
Why not telling them yes, getting the numbers and then figuring out what you want to do?
Not disclosing the breakdown is complete BS.
Agree, complete BS. Sucks to see recruiters like these around, in SVL AMZN recruiters I have worked with are much better
I’m pretty sure OP is mistaking. Recruiter probably doesn’t have the exact offer yet so just gave a ballpark. You get your formal offer letter with exact numbers, then you decide whether to sign it or not.
I agree with this. Of course the break down matters but with amazons vesting schedule you can expect to see about $150k cash the first year, between base and signing bonus with the other $10k in stock. Likely even more than $150k cash though
You are being greedy
WDE is a second class citizen at amazon. Why would you take this low offer and title? Reject offer and move on.
What is WDE? Is your 7 years all at US?
Web Development Engineer, AFAIK same as SDE just more focused on front end. And yes, all 7 in US.
Try Microsoft then. Your TC will be similar or higher. Then add the benefits of Microsoft. Your actual income will be 20k more thanks to benefits like no insurance premium, max 401k match etc Also be aware of Amazon’s back vesting schedule for stock. Amazon recruiters seem incompetent so they might be fulling you about TC as well.
