What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I see a lot of Microsoft bashing in Blind and animosity towards it (some of them are from ex-msft). Microsoft is doing fantastic and its market cap will likely overtake Google this year making it 2nd largest tech company. I interned at Microsoft 4 years ago and it was a great experience. I learned a ton. I sorta get it for Amazon which is known for bad WLB, but why Microsoft?
Personally I see the hype as all vapourware and our execs are using us to advance their personal agenda
Hear hear.
They hate us cuz they ain't us
They hate is cuz they anus?
Probably cause their tech stack is windows mostly. Still not a good reason though. Also I guess it's not seen as "prestigious" or "hip" as those unicorns or FNG. Fwiw I think Microsoft is a good place, I was an ex intern also
first time ive seen a tinder employee here. Do devs auto match themselves with every hot girl they want?
Lol no we don't do that. Prod data access is strictly controlled as it is in many companies
Are you a man?
Don’t play that card. Pretty much all tech companies have the gender problem. Googles memo, uber well not going there.
Microsoft is in the same boat at amazon for me: great business, undesirable place to work. When blinders find out how uncompetitive msft is they bash it.
Yeah the uncompetitiveness is the negative reason I’m leaving for Facebook. There are positive things that I imagine about Facebook that attract me there other than the money, but the money thing is just like a sign of disrespect.
Which team do you work on? My team in azure is super competitive...
I’m still bitter about the toxic Ballmer years. That’s when our self-esteem tanked, and we still feel the effects 4 years after he’s gone. The money-making organizations at Microsoft are slowly changing, but the emphasis is on “slowly”. If you’re impatient to make your mark, it’s probably not the place to be.
How easy is it to switch orgs at an early career level?
Easy enough. I think we still do full loops when moving cross org, but there’s no bullshit minimum time to stay in a team, or having to notify your manager.
I feel that’s because the general opinion about MSFT is that it is filled with corporate, rigid, slow-decision making people who don’t make cool, polished products and care only about optimizing for money and not the user experience. Also, a lot of my friends also believe that Microsoft and Amazon are second tier companies and people only go there when they’re rejected by FANG. I really hope this is not the case but this is the general opinion I’ve heard around in the Bay Area.
Your first characterization is dead on, at least of my org (and I don’t hate it, it’s just the nature of the business we’re in and the fact that we have very little to gain by taking risks).
I interned at Azure Analytics Insights org (it was still very new). Code quality is top notch, very impressive engineers. Many of those folks are now in FB. FB code quality is worse that msft. I think msft has strong outliers, though median talent is lower than FB or Google.
There are people who do not want to work in FANG as there is more to life than working in sweat shops. Thinking about prestige and power, it’s all a mindgame. At the end of the day, one needs to feel fulfilled and happy and if we seek happiness in our jobs alone, then we can never be happy.
Well said but worth noting many companies pay market rate beyond just fang. Startups included.
I worked in five startups and that’s not true for the most part. And again, you really don’t have a life when you are in a startup. Grass is always greener on the other side.
They write command and control type of spyware and DOJ does nothing about it. Kind of annoying. MS obviosly has a deal with all 3 letter agencies to allow their ops.
For azure services, yes, for access to windows... absolutely not. Microsoft has never given back door access to any 3 letter agencies. Chinese and Russian governments would absolutely not use Windows if we were compromised by NSA or CIA. There are plenty of companies comprised by three letter agencies but it's not Microsoft
Seeing as there's a lot of you who think the NSA are logging every keystroke of yours, here's what I wrote below: The NT kernel is the most audited, studied, and reverse engineered piece of code in human history. The idea that the NSA has a backdoor in it is not only incredibly naive, it's laughable.
