Just got laid off from Capital one. Talent management grading is complete bs and we were told all of a sudden today. Looking for any job openings for scrum master, product manager, program manager, project manager, business analyst, data analyst, or similar roles. I am completing my MBA next semester and already have an MPH if that helps. Extensive experience with jira, confluence, tableau and SQL. In the process of studying for security+ as well. Let me know if anyone is hiring or would be willing to give a referral. Thank you all for your help! #jobopening #hiring #recruiting
Sorry to hear that :( What was your role at capital one?
I was a cyber analyst - did a lot of program management as well
What does a scrum master do? Is it just a note taker role and you need to be good at excel and word?
You should be a little sensitive
C1 scrum masters = at least 50% of the reason I quit C1. Their personal career progression depends on scheduling meetings for the team (if you took away all the meetings for ICs on my old team, it would be almost equal to an extra developer). They also have 0 technical understanding and you have to explain everything to them. Definitely prefer where actual contributing members of the team (TL, PM, etc) assume parts of the role - much easier to accomplish the same thing while aligning incentives (or not creating unnecessary meetings).
You just listed 6 different roles bro, find out what you're good at and focus on that
I’ve done all of the above in certain aspects. In agile roles, they all intertwine anyways
When you’re looking for a job absolutely do not silo yourself into just one thing. List your skills and apply broadly to different roles.
Those roles you listed are all over the place. Pick a career dude.
Appreciate the amazing advice! These roles, if you understood them, have a ton of overlap between them. I’ve done aspects of these roles in my job which is why I’ve listed them out here. I’m also willing to learn them as well
I know exactly what those roles are. They’re each dedicated careers. In fact at Capital One, they are all official title designations in other job families. When you list a bunch of stuff, you make it seem like you want a job, any job. Focus on THE job and career you want.
I feel like it’s not a layoff if it’s performance based. In your case you got fired?
Unfortunately yes. It was a very unfair review (i know it sounds like complaining but I promise if you saw it you’d say the same)
C1 has been moving more towards layoffs but not calling them layoffs. Hitting 5-10% of your workforce with PIP/terminations is basically a layoff, IMO.
Dude/dudette. A couple of points. 1. Learn to take feedback better, that’s really important for a solid career doing pretty much anything. Two people gave you the exact same feedback and you were dismissive of both with a nonsensical response. 2. I would never hire someone who says they can do all the roles you mentioned, any good hiring manager would assume this means you have no strong skills and are a master of none. 3. The feedback is correct, you have no career so far and will never build one unless you focus on one role and master it. Who would you hire to build your house, the contractor who has built 20 houses and made it his life’s job or the guy who built 1 house, fixes cars when he’s not in construction, works in a restaurant on weekends? Who would you hire? Think dude!
Terrible advice and tldr. Plus condescending.
I appreciate you saying this because clearly you didn’t get the point. Having many skills is important nowadays as everyone can do everything. It has nothing to do with receiving feedback well if it’s condescending or rude. Think on that as well. As to your analogy, both show aspects of what you want in someone being hired. 20 houses built like crap but quick and 1 house built well while doing other things. Your analogy fails to provide any sort of context except numbers. Saying I’ve done aspects of all these roles doesn’t mean I’m going to do all of them wherever I go. It just means I have a well rounded skill set and I’m willing to learn to advance that. Please think critically prior to responding
To be clear, yesterday was layoffs with a criteria of performance. PIP implies a firing and severance is much lower for a firing. Additionally, these people commenting are extremely rude. It’s very normal to dabble in different skill sets. You’ll be fine. Don’t stress too much
Thank you! Just felt like I wanted to vent a bit. I didn’t come here for pity or anything but I see how the landscape of corporate America has people brainwashed into think different skill sets aren’t useful

DM me, I have a PO owner position open, if you’re a fit.
I would really appreciate that thank you! Can i send you my resume tomorrow once I edit it?

Fired?
Unfortunately yes. Tryna get things together for a new role
Technically I think you were laid off. They’re trying to spin it as performance but it’s not. Performance was the criteria to select those who they laid off.
